What's the point of ranks?

Well if it's fun it's not entirely pointless. But if it's boring, and there are no in-game goals beyond getting gear, and if the journey is just as crap as the destination, then it's pointless.

The whole progression system is just so f**ked up and out of balance with the content (or lack thereof)

I have tried Rift, WoW, Aion in my opinion they are all far more boring then XIV currently. Maby not at endgame but I cannot stomach the game to get that far, quest based leveling is just horribly boring. Other feel the same way about group grinding.

So what specifically is fun, that everyone agrees with. The answer is simple absolute nothing.

And btw the Goals in every mmo in existence has been to either progress through the story or Get gear, gear being the thing that keeps ppl playing for a long duration. Most ppl do story line to get gear....
