The game is about building a character right now, just as FFXI was when it was originally released. Endgame in that game was not added until the first expansion. Why they did that again your guess is as good as mine.

Which is the issue with most people in the game they see no reason to do anything because there is nothing to look forward for, no one can make their own goals anymore these days. Currently it will take probally at least 4-5 months to build a good job if you play 4-5hrs a day. So that is a significant amount to do... but you have to like character development or you will say it is pointless. Currently there is technically about 14-16months of content playing 40+hrs a week in the game before you truly run out of stuff to do all classes capped and your character maxed out.

It is guaranteed there will be endgame dungeons, raids, more high level NMS the devs have already stated they are going to add them, we just do not see them in game yet. So atm you are making an investment into the game. When the content is added you can do it, if you wait you have to take the 4-5 months to make a good job to be able to do the content efficiently.

Like my linkshells goal, get everyone with a craft leveled up and get at least everyone to rank 50 on at least 1 job and get their sub classes they need up to 35+ if not higher. That way when endgame is here we can instantly do it with no down time, we can craft and make profit at the ps3 release with a capped craft.

This is truly not a game that makes goals for you.
