The reason why the Buster Sword became a Limit Break and was not added to the game as an actual weapon is because that Limit Break animation was from ARR's launch in 2013, when great swords as a weapon in the game did not exist (DRK wasn't added til at least two years later with the first expansion Heavensward.). And SE have just never decided to go back and change it (this is the same reason why Lightning's gunblade the Blazefire Sabre is a GLA/PLD weapon rather than for GNB as you would otherwise expect - GNB didn't exist as a Job in this game at the time the FFXIII event was run either).

There has been a lot of rumours about a FFVII themed crossover event but nothing sadly was ever confirmed or came of it (I suspect the pandemic probably didn't help - we lost year's Halloween event due to it throwing the development schedule of the game out of sync so they probably just abandoned any ideas of running a new FFVII one to tie-in with the Remake), but players did get Cloud's Advent Children attire rather than his old SOLDIER outfit from the original game as a Veteran Reward (and before you pass judgement on that, Squall's outfit here in FFXIV wasn't based on his original game appearence either - it was based on his Kingdom Hearts and Dissidia attire instead), and also his Fenrir motorcycle from the same film was added to the Mogstation (we also got Cloud, Aeris and Tifa minions to boot).

The current Weapon trial battles that are part of SHB's patch story are based on the WEAPONs from FFVII too, so we sort of have a FFVII themed (or at least ideas based on) event in the game. It's not the same as the special FFXI, XIII or XV events, but it is better than nothing.

Also it should be worth mentioning that Yoshi is on record as saying his personal favourite FF game is FFVII, so make of that what you will.
