Games stutters when Ps4 controller is connected

Hi, I am running into an issue where if I launch the game with the PS4 controller connected the game stutters every 3-4 seconds. If I launch the game without the controller it runs fine but I struggle with Keyboard/mouse controls. Not sure what is going on but I have tested 3 controllers, wireless & wired all resulting with the same outcome. I'm running the game on the following:

macOS Mojave 10.14.6
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)
Processor - 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory - 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics - Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB (the game defaults to the AMD Radeon R9 M370X

Does this issue occur if the drivers of the controller are updated? Additionally, when testing it on different controllers, were only PS4 controllers used? Or does the issue occur on a XInput controller?

To be honest I don't have/see a way to update the controller drivers on the mac. The PS4 controllers on a mac are just plug and play via usb chord. When I was testing I only had PS4 controllers. I started noticing the issue around the time patch 5.3 came out.
