    Tank Mastery's Tooltip is mistranslated

    1. Read the English tooltip for Tank Mastery
Reduces damage taken by 20%. Furthermore, grants a bonus to maximum HP based on your vitality attribute, and a bonus to damage dealt based on your strength attribute.
and note that it describes a bonus to damage based on strength.
    2. Read the Japanese tooltip for タンクマスタリー
    自身の被ダメージを20%軽減させる。
    また、VITの上昇に伴う最大HPの上昇量と、STRの上昇に伴う与ダメージの上昇量に対して、Tankロール固有の補正がかかる。
and note that it describes an adjustment to the amount of damage provided by an increase in strength.
    3. Test skill damage numbers on a training dummy to determine the tank strength scaling.
    4. Find that the adjustment to tank strength scaling as described in the Japanese tooltip is not a bonus as described in the English tooltip.

This definitely seems to be a mistranslation, because in Japanese it is not saying there is a bonus to damage, but rather an appropriate adjustment (implying a reduction to damage because of the fact the person is a tank).

This may fit better in the localisation forum though.

Wait, this makes no sense. The complaint is about the adjustment to the strength stat, but not the vitality stat? But both the Japanese and the English tool tips use the exact same wording to state the effects of both. Why complain about one but not the other? In the case of the game the terms adjustment and bonus mean the same thing. There is nothing wrong with the tool tip it is structured as intended.

Well the vitality adjustment is a bonus, so the tooltip isn't really wrong about that. The strength adjustment is a penalty though.

How is it a penalty though? After some searching, I think I see what you are trying to say. In that case both are a bit misleading but the Japanese version gives room for interpretation.

Now we are in the translation forum, the Japanese version says:
Reduces your damage by 20%. In addition, the amount of increase in maximum HP due to the increase in VIT and the amount of increase in damage dealt due to the increase in STR are corrected unique to the Tank roll.
    While the English version says:
Reduces damage taken by 20%. Furthermore, grants a bonus to maximum HP based on your vitality attribute, and a bonus to damage dealt based on your strength attribute.
Underlined is where there seems to be a significant difference in what they are saying. Emboldened it's saying there is a bonus while the Japanese version is not saying either way whether there is a bonus or a reduction, but it's obviously implying a reduction because the tank role is supposed to do less damage than the DPS role.

Perhaps this is intended but I doubt it, because people who do the maths can see there is a reduction to a tank's strength attribute compared not just to DPS, but even compared to healers.

My understanding is that tank mastery is supposed to give a bonus to outgoing tank damage to compensate for the STR on tank gear being only 70% of the main stat on other roles' gear. Is this not the case?

Tank gear has had the same amount of strength as other roles since ShB. To compensate for this tanks recieve less benefit per point of main stat than any of the other role (which as a result means that tank overall damage contribution has gone down slightly from 5.0-5.4)

Ah, you're right. I was comparing the Emerald RDM and AST weapons to the Emerald PLD sword instead of one of the other tank weapons.

In that case it makes sense for them to have a penalty rather than a bonus, so that they don't do the same damage as an equally geared DD.
