I on the quest is Legend of the Not-so-hidden Temple. the big ball got me

There are small gaps in the side walls. You need to hide in them while the ball rolls past, then move to the next one and hide again, making your way along the passage bit by bit.

It's actually pretty easy - when I did it and saw the alcoves on the side it was really clear what you had to do, and sure enough, that was the key.

In some respects it's also training for a similar mechanic in a battle encountered later, specifically the attack

Therion uses, the final boss of ShB's final dungeon Amaurot - the platform you fight the boss on has small extensions on each side, and you have to quickly move to one of them to avoid it's instant-kill blaster attack which it uses regularly and which you simply cannot defend against otherwise.

Either way, quickly run into the alcoves to avoid the giant boulders and when one passes, you should be able to quickly run to the next one before another ball reaches you.
