can i disable the xp buff?

i have this buff "road to 70"
my quests are level 14 and i am level 22.
I feel no challenge from the quests and when I level up, I feel nothing because it's happening so often.
I am gaining new skills at a rate that has me struggling to learn how to play and I'm feeling overwhelmed.
I just want chance to breathe.

    edit:
okay never mind. see, i quickly deleted and remade my character because of a total messed up quest and all that. didn't see the double xp message.
so the wonderful news is, i have to start yet another character.
    this is just going swimmingly!

    edit:
please, someone tell me i can get rid of this... i really don't want to start again

I'm not sure how you "messed up a quest" but you shouldn't ever have to delete a character to solve that. At worst you might have to restart the quest itself, but I'm not sure what would make you need to do that either.

The simplest way to not get the buff is to not pick a preferred server.

There are benefits to a preferred server though (IIRC free feather tokens for buying gear, and 15 days' free play time for reaching level 30), so a good way of managing the buff is to pick up a second class and switch between them. EXP for each class is earned separately and only goes to the class that you are set to when you complete the quest, so you can switch between them and do a lot of your quests on that second class to level it up instead of your main. You can even pick a crafting or gathering class for this, or a battle class you don't really want to play.

Your level largely doesn't matter as far as being overleveled goes. Stats come from gear and the majority of important content will level sync you.

If you REALLY don't want the buff, you need to make your character on a non-preferred server

Oh that's really good!!! that might solve the problem completely!! so if I run back to new gridania and pick up archery (I never had any interest in ranged classes) then every time I hand in a quest, switch to archery... I will soon find that my quests and my lancer level are more equalised. brilliant!!! thank you, you've saved me!!! ^_^

with regards to that business with the messed up quest... there is a major problem with this game, where if you pick a story quest, you have to be really careful not to press any buttons. you can't select another player or inspect them. you can't reply to any messages in your message log. you can't do anything because if you do, the dialogue will advance whether you've read it or not, and you can't get it back. you can't abandon MSQs, and you can't speak to the npc and get that dialogue back.
I think this is really bad design... I can't see any benefit in it, and it can cause major problems for players who are precious about their own character's experience within the world.

edit: I just realised I only wrote half of what happened. that was the part of the issue, but there was a major quest event at a big tree, where I was supposed to fight off a bad guy for the bowyers... I couldn't even target the enemies and I was getting so frustrated and felt like I was useless.. then they all thanked me for saving them and I couldn't bear it because it felt like I was being mocked, then another guy appeared but then two people came in and killed it instead of me because I couldn't target it, then they all 'mocked me' some more, saying I was brilliant. and I went postal and tried to skip it all to try and see if there was any way I could restart the quest. of course I couldn't. and my character's story had been ruined at that point. I find it hard to take that kind of thing at the best of times but things are especially bad at the moment for me, so I just restarted the game.

If you do miss dialogue, the "Event" tab in your chat log is recording it all so you have a chance to go back and review it. Also I think you can cancel and restart the quest in this situation as long as you haven't spoken to the last person with the green marker, but I've never tried it.

Also you'll need to clear your level 10 lancer quest before you can pick up archery, but yes.

And you will sometimes get those moments where you spend half the fight dead on the floor but the other NPCs or players kill it. Just accept the game has no idea what you're doing as long as the fight gets cleared, and go with it.

Pressing L1 while you're holding down R2 for your battle skills is the easiest way to target an enemy.

One more helpful note. As you advance the main storyline you unlock a lot of features of the game. One of the ones you get fairly early(you might already have it, i dont remember the level it comes out at) is access to an Inn room. If you go into the inn room(theres an inn in each major city, and they all let you use them once you get access) you have a bunch of features you can interact with. The bed logs you out with a mini going to sleep cutscene. The door is just an exit. The armoire can store certain pieces of gear. The glamour dresser can store additional gear, and the two of them combined form a good portion of the glamour system. There are bells to summon retainers and the aesthetician once you unlock those, theres a toy chest that lets you play a few mini games. The important one(the reason i bring all this up) is The Unending Journey. Its a journal sitting on a desk, and if you use it you can replay certain cutscenes. The book is sorted by quest type(main quest, side quest, job quest, etc), and also has entries for dungeons and other instances where you may get a short scene(i realize you might not have quite gotten to the first dungeon yet - most dungeons dont feature a ton of cutscenes so dont worry about it too much). So if you missed something in a cutscene, you might be able to go back and view it again later. And as Iscah said, the event tab will have character dialogue from the quests youve done during your current session.

Thank you, that is such a lovely write up. I found myself in the inn quite by accident after fainting during a festival.
I was quite surprised by all these things, having no idea what they were for ^_^
