It's a beautiful game with a lot of potential.

I play to stay current, as each update increases the genuine appeal of the game and I won't feel behind with the release of 2.0

Hmm... Because the game have great potential based on the job diversity (FFT / Ogre Battle / FFXI), lore, design (gears / monsters / places).

Playing with people from everywhere which mean a diversity in the way of thinking.
Learning about other culture through discussion and cooperative play with people from other countries.
Enjoy the same way content and what we achieve together in spite of coming from a different country.
Experience language change according to timezones which give an exotic aspect to the game.

The effort and motivation of the new team working on FFXIV despite the previous state of the game... And seeing how they've been able to improve the quality of the product. Which makes me interested in the new content they will add once 2.0 out and nothing to restrain their time in lore/content development.

ok i bite and try to answer this seriously
there are a lot of reasons i play FFXIV, first and foremost it passes all my personal minimum requirements for an MMO i can enjoy (bold ones are the most important for me):
    >I can play it with a gamepad
    >Beautiful and high detail character models with a sufficient amount of customization
    > all races are able to play all classes (nothing i hate more than race locked classes)
    >equipment items that you can recognize by look no matter what race wears it
    >you can level all classes on one character deepening your emotional bond with your in game avatar (not a must but highly missed when not present)
    >highly customizable camera position (this isn't a must but but i really miss it in TERA for example, with the right setting it helps my immersion immensely)
    >an UI that doesn't clutter the whole screen with buttons.

    FFXIV passes all that

    add to that:
    >the nostalgia of the races
    >the beautiful music score
    >the presentation of side-quests (NPCs talk to you in sentences and not just dump a window with a wall of text on your screen)
    >great animations where you can actually feel the weight of your characters steps as you run
    >main scenario quests with cinematic cut-scenes including your own character with all the gear you wear it the moment
    >a beautiful game world (flawed only by repeating map structures which will be fixed and improved in 2.0)
of course the final fantasy name is another reason why i am attracted to the game in the first place

at first i was as unhappy with the game as everyone else, but i couldn't just abandon it because i felt that it has so much potential to turn into something i will love for years to come, and that feeling turned out to be not too far from what actually happened since naoki yoshida took over as director and producer and i found myself enjoying the game more and more after every single patch (for me 1.18 was the patch where i really started to have a great time)
since then the game only got better and better in my opinion and the concept and plans presented for 2.0 really thrill me

i plan to play other mmos as well at the same time, TERA for example i will play too for a while (even thou it falls flat on some of my requirements) because of the combat (and because i need a Monster Hunter substitute lol)
FFXIV is my main mmo where i will invest the majority of the time i can provide for MMOS in

keep in mind all this are my own personal opinions and feeling about the game and what i prefer in mmos in gerneral

I play as I do like most of the game, I enjoy knowing a lot about it, (where as I can walk in SWTOR and no idea what anything is XD even after playing 2months)

I have many friends and love my new server, those keep me playing really, if there was no merge i'd likely cancel my char until 2.0

This is what PLers actually believe. May Altana have mercy on our souls...

It's the social aspect that makes this game fun for me. I absolutely hate the grind and I hate the repetitiveness of leves, but I enjoy them when with others. If you ask me, this is more of a social game to me. I spend most of my time helping other people, whether it be with leves, quests, leveling, or even dungeons. I think the game itself is lacking in many departments due to many problems plaguing it, which seem to be mostly caused by the engine itself. The story itself is too short and having to go back and level after every scenario quest caused me to grow bored of it quickly. But, due to how it's organized in a way where you need the people around you to advance through the many AF/Dungeon and even some story quests, it makes it fun for me. If a single player FF game played like this, I probably wouldn't touch it, which is much like how XI was for me.

There are more things than this that are good about this game, especially the music (except for the dungeon music that I'm already sick of) and the animations. The graphics are nice, but are far too taxing for the level of quality that they really have.

Hm..this is a good question, I never really thought about it.
I certainly enjoy different things in FFXIV than in other MMORPGs, which may be because FFXIV doesn't really have anything in my usual play-reason-categories.

I usually play MMORPGs for the exploration part; finding beautiful places, hidden treasures, etc.
I also enjoy crafting a lot. Doing all kind of stuff with a nice guild is also something I like.

FFXIV though..does not really make me want to explore.
The world right now is just too..samelooking, copypasted and boring.
Invisible borders everywhere and if I manage to get to a hidden place full of high lvl aggro monsters, there is NOTHING there to reward me for going there :/

Crafting..not so much. Actually, FFXIV's crafting system is the most horrible one I've ever seen x-X'
I fall asleep after 5 min at most.

The community part is strong in this one though
RL friends of me are playing with me which is something I haven't had in a while.
I love my Linkshell, friends I made outside of my LS and the whole community which is a lot more grown-up than the ones in many other MMOs.
Just the people wouldn't be enough for me to play a game though.
I think..what I enjoy most about FFXIV is the rich lore and story.
    It's beautiful
I can't search for special places on the world map, so I search for all those tiny pieces of information hidden everywhere, enjoy the story and so on
