What are the core reasons you're playing this game?
What do I mean by that. Well,
exploring areas, killing monsters, and earning loot are reasons to play, but they're not necessarily core reasons.
Ask yourself.
What kind of feeling are you trying to grasp when playing? A sense of discovery? Belonging? Accomplishment? Do you play to feel stronger? Do you play to feel as though you're part of another world, that you're affecting something?
Is this feeling unique to FFXIV, or do you seek it out in other games as well?
Do you think the game is fulfilling your needs?
Many players here have found reasons to play, despite getting all jobs to level 50, despite being up to date with all the achievements, and despite all the criticism the game has received. I'm interested to know what those reasons are.
EDIT: "BECAUSE IT'S FUN" (while I agree) IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE ANSWER.THIS IS AN ESSAY TEST. YOU WILL BE GRADED

For me, the biggest reason I play currently is because it's fun to see how the game is progressing from crap product to Final Fantasy. It's fun to be part of the development and keep up to date with the goings-on. Of late, I've been visiting the forums more than actually playing the game. I don't think I'm the only one.
I want the game to be able to make me feel like I'm part of a community/world, like I'm able to make change just by playing and doing my own thing. Currently, the game is having trouble doing that, and it's mostly the clunky UI to blame for me. It really sucks to A: go back to a city state only to have to spend hours trying to sort out a clunky inventory, and B: not have a home to call my own and instead stand around the crowded street feeling like a hooligan.
I want to be part of a team and make that perfect cohesive unit that kicks all kinds of ass. I think this is where the job system has really shined a lot. I've only full partied about 3 times or so, but being a PLD rocks pretty hard. Just an exhilirating feeling. Way more intense than say, what Behests used to be like. Whenever I do play, I always try to get into a full party, or play with friends, because currently that's where I feel this game is really strong at the moment.
I want to be able to play the game my way and feel unique and strong when I finally reach the top. This is kinda iffy for me at the moment. I could be asking too much of this game by wanting this. It deals with the whole hardcore/casual argument, and I'm definitely a casual. While I totally understand a hardcore mentality, where they want the time they invested to pay off in big ways, I also feel that I shouldn't be left out of cool things just because I only leveled one class, or only played a couple hours a day, or don't have that cool rare gear that everyone else has. I think that the game should reward players for being unique in their playstyle, and reward skill more than stats whenever possible. But... this is an RPG, which is usually about stats. So.... hmm. I dunno where I'm going with this really....!
TLR - My core reasons for playing MMOs are community, growth, and teamwork. I feel that FFXIV currently delivers in some areas, while falling short in others. I'm eagerly waiting for 2.0 to see how this changes my expectations.
