I hate the Casual attire with every fiber of my being and think it's both exceedingly ugly, *and* immersion breaking. However... you are absolutely correct *sigh*. That willingness to step over those lines design-wise is what separates FF from many other games. It's not a "fantasy" game. It's a FINAL Fantasy game. This isn't your boring old European middle age fairy tale fantasy game. Final Fantasy games have always broken the mold of what's considered "fantasy." FFVII was a game about an energy concern sucking the earth dry in a dark grey steam punk city. FFVIII went from high tech garden, over 50's America Dollet over to futuristic Esthar and that's what made the games so brilliant. They go outside the box. Who says fantasy has to be about elves and goblins? You can have modern fantasy, futuristic fantasy. Fantasy just means there is some whimsical otherworldly element and Final Fantasy brings it. That's why Final Fantasy games are so adored. They break your expectations in the most delicious ways.
my immersion in the game is not dependant of aproval of others, neither should yours. chill!!
THANK YOU PLEASE! Say it again and say it louder so the world can freaking read this wonderful and TRUE post. It's not a "fantasy" game. It's a FINAL Fantasy game. Meanwhile Ishgard is medieval with people in gorgeous medieval-Renaissance clothing until suddenly there are orphan kiddies wearing modern stylish coats.Final Fantasy games have always broken the mold of what's considered "fantasy." I don't so much mind players wearing out-of-setting things but the fact is that what gets made "for players" is then the pool of gear models that the game designers have to draw on when dressing their minor NPCs who aren't special enough to get custom outfits – and I think that shows glaringly and immersion-breakingly in the Firmament compared to the rest of Ishgard.
? I think it adds more to the immersion. After all, the world is vast, and we are travelers. We bring style and fashion to this ugly elf city. I mean have you been to a tourist spot? People stand out like sore thumbs that don't live in the area.Meanwhile Ishgard is medieval with people in gorgeous medieval-Renaissance clothing until suddenly there are orphan kiddies wearing modern stylish coats.

At my limit posting today, but ya I see point. But could it be that because they open up to adventures and such. Kids see the new fashion and mock it. After all we are heros to them right? So a kids mimics our fashion seems normal to me. Even though comes in question how they get resources to do it. lol

That's my point. It's okay for us to wear it, because we are not locals. But it's weird when they start using it for the locals, because that's the range of gear the programmers have available to dress them in.
Lalafells.
No offense to Lalafell players I don't actually care I am just responding to OP.
As much as you want to complain about the 2B legs etc the mere existence of Lalafells especially as anything but healers and maybe casters completely destroys any of these arguments imo.
The game setting also clearly has modern clothing in it even with story characters and what is essentially modern technology in Magitek.
Even with fantasy costumes I'd say that Lyse in early Stormblood for example still looks fairly modern, that ain't no medieval clothing she's wearing remove the plate legs and I could see someone wear that irl.
The setting has jumped from high fantasy to sci-fi but neither of those require modern-looking street clothing to exist in the meanwhile.
For example, the Garlean "magitek reaper" vehicles are high-tech but in a way that feels ornate and fantastic – a thing we don't see in everyday life. Assuming Ironworks gear is Garlean fashion, that's not modern clothing either – it's closer to it than the medieval stuff, but it's not something you'd see someone wearing in the real world either.
On the other hand, the car mount feels out of place in a way that the reaper doesn't, and the modern fashion gear feels out of place in a way that the sci-fi gear doesn't.
It's about wanting to see something "not from real life" more than strictly medieval fantasy.
At the same time, it's particularly jarring to see modern clothes in medieval-themed Ishgard even if they might suit a level of technology found elsewhere.
I can agree with this I do prefer when they look a bit more fantasy too.
Like again with Lyse from early Stormblood, her attire still looks fantasy.
But it also looks influenced by irl clothing and wouldn't be completely unbelievable as real clothing.
Kinda the same with Gaia too her attire is obviously inspired by irl fashion but it still looks stylized to the point it fits.
Personally tho I don't find this particularly immersion breaking.
And immersion isn't something I am thinking much about, if I did I'd never be able to take things seriously with again Lalafells running around as Warriors for example.

Well, I'm kinda new and like to go for the fantasy aesthetic, but at the same time, doesn't final fantasy feature things like... Space ships, motorcycles, automatic weapons/lasers and stuff in other games?
I only played VII as a kid but I clearly remember very sci-fi steampunky notes?
Actually, its not that immersion breaking.
FFXIV is on a unique position where fantasy and science-fiction gear can be added without breaking the immersion. Even modern aesthetics got a small fantasy touch, which fit into FFXIV very well. There are many other MMORPGs who are much worse.
Mostly, they are very carefull what to add into the game. Sometimes they are too carefull (I want sin eater glamour!!!).
I've said this once so I'll say it again.
Who cares if someone sees your glamour. I like the shisui fending set on my tank because bikini armor. If someone has a glam toggle and they see me in my exarchic gear then that's fine. It's YOU vile, vain, voracious arseholes who act like they need validation from some random chucklenut in Minnesota in order to live.
Get over yourself. The world doesn't revolve around you, me, or anyone else.
