    Necromancer Job Suggestion

Not sure if this is in the correct category or not but this is my concept idea for a possible new DPS Caster class.

Basis: The Job Quests of the NCR revolve around learning the arts of death and using them to punish those who enslave spirits or the undead for nefarious ends. The Shepherds of the Lost work as a group that free spirits and help them achieve peace and move on to their intended afterlife. To this end they use the Oath I, II, and III commands summoning the Dead to aid them in granting other less fortunate souls peace and unleashing umbral aspected attacks from beyond the grave with Dark Arts.

Tool: Necromancers use Battle Scythes, to reap the souls of the wicked, defend themselves, and use as a focus to channel their Dark Arts. A Necromancer uses a scythe to quickly maim beings that mean harm to them dashing and slashing in a deadly dance of the macabre. A scythe also due to its similarity to the Rods used by Black Mages is also a good focus to channel arcane magics pulled from the mysterious beyond.

Oath: A staple to the Necromancer is their ability to summon the undead. Bargaining with the Reaper, once armed with the Necromancer Soul Crystal, Necromancer's have the ability to petition the dead to aid them. Some Necromancers are known to enslave and abuse the dead seeing them merely as tools to and end. Once petitioned one of three types of undead can be summoned temporarily to assist. The longer the Undead are out the more Umbral Aether they acquire.
    • Oath I: Wraith - The Wraith acts as a decoy drawing opponents towards it while slinging spells at them. When an enemy gets to close it can unleash an ear splitting shriek stunning them. Wraiths lack alot of endurance but are quite fast.
    • Oath II: Dullahan - Acting similar to a wall the Dullahan armed with its great sword acts as a barrier and a guardian for their master. Armed with a strong constitution the Dullahan can take more damage than most spirits but is slower in dealing damage.
    • Oath III: Corse - Corse's are fast and strong dealing many attacks their soul goal being to kill unless ordered to desist. Fast to act but lacking real stamina they must rely on their petitioner to keep them in the world of the living for very long.

Dark Arts: Powerful AoE spells and Buffs that call upon the forces of death and can only be used by Necromancers these spells are devastatingly powerful. Hinging on the acquisition of Umbral Aether acquired by petitioned undead and returned to the Necromancer upon casting a Dark Art. Depending on the level of the Dark Art, the amount of Umbral Aether needed will vary.

Tell me what you think. I'm open to constructive criticism.

Usually suggestions for new jobs go in the respective role categories (e.g., new DPS job -> DPS roles), but as far as I know, there's no rule enforcing this so I expect you'll be OK posting here. If there is a downside, it's that topics in General Discussion can get buried fast.

I personally like this concept. Not too shabby.

Wouldn't fit. Necromancy is a hanging crime in all of Eorzea. Caught with it, you die. The WoL doesn't make a habit of committing what is seen as capitol crimes. Even black magic is only illegal in Gridania and we have significant reasons to get away with that, there is no defense for corpsemongering.

Not just Gridania, it's a crime everywhere in Eorzea (especially Ul'dah, which, kind of created their own zombie apocalypse via alchemy centuries before during their war with Sil'dih and have since swept it under the rug, and have made great pains to keep it that way, so a Job that reminds everyone of that fact would not sit well with them at all). Also, and this is a very important point to remember, throughout much of the game's story the player's character the Warrior of Light has spent a good deal of their time outright stopping people mucking around with necromancy and other similar void magic, the game makes great pains to state within the lore "this is WRONG" and those doing so are criminals. So the WoL will never be one themselves.

And ignore the claims SE have hinted at the Job in the Heroes' Gauntlet; the 'Spectral Necromancer' in that is actually meant to be a reference to Lenna's Necromancer appearence from the GBA version of FFV - the other two bosses are similar references (the 'Spectral Berserker' is one of the Onion Knights as Berserker from FFIII, and the 'Spectral Thief' is none other than Locke from FFVI).

And just like why ROG was not called 'Thief' here in FFXIV, as Yoshi felt being a thief would not fit the image of the WoL, an outcast mage raising the dead as thralls simply goes against everything the WoL stands for here (even other 'dark' Jobs in this game really aren't if you actually look at them - BLM merely piggybacks on THM, and DRK is actually drawing on emotions, both good and bad, and are not actually evil at all). Necromancer simply does not fit.

And the final nail in the coffin (pun intended) to the OP: your idea is a pet Job, and Yoshi has stated how much he dislikes pet Jobs as they are extremely difficult to balance and take up extra development time to work out, so you simply will not see any more pet Jobs in the game I'm sorry to say (ACN's Carbuncles, SMN's egi/demi summons, SCH's faeries and MCH's turrets will be the limit of that).

So basically, you shoot down Necromancy by saying that black magic is also frowned upon, while also saying that exceptions were made. So...it could still happen by your logic. I think it's unlikely, but you sort of contradicted yourself here.

No, I said black magic is illegal in one place which isn't going to execute someone who is a friend of their allies, that their allies don't outlaw, that kind of thing starts wars among former allies. Necromancy is illegal EVERYWHERE, so an execution on that charge would be uncontested.

    EDIT:To be clear.
"You can't punish them for black magic because we don't see it as a crime" vs "Oh, necromancy, punish them or we will."

Read what I said. Black magic is only illegal in one place. Necromancy is illegal EVERYWHERE.

And yet, exceptions COULD happen. The lore isn't set in stone. One day the Alliance could have need of Necromancers who summon spirits of the dead to help combat some unknown threat.

You need to go run the story and sidequests again. That's not how death works in this game. Learn the lore before you try to cite it.

EDIT:While we're at it do you have ANY idea what death smells like? Ever been near a rotting corpse? I have. It's horrible. Not something associated with heroes.
