Its the cost of it, to upgrade all thier equipment in San Fransico and London (most likey places) will cost the atleast 50k, possibly over 100k, SE has dumped alot of money into this game already, and 2.0 has (while we all hope this turns out to be wrong) the possibility of failure, do you really think SE want to pay that much and see 2.0 fail?

I have no idea how big the server rooms in thier regional offices are either, it could require physical expasion of thier offices to accomodate the servers, which is extra cost. It may come if the game ends up a success and they are confident to spend the money, but before its a success no way in hell.

Thats still doesn't change the fact that free to play manage to pull it off.

They have to build these servers anyway, so why not build them in specific regions ?

I think making the choice after 2.0 is the worst thing they can do, it would require much more work and upheaval after the game is running than prior.

As much as I want regional/local servers I am also realistic and know that the chances are next to zero mainly because .. well it's SE we are talking about.

And why do you think they started charging for a broken game, because they wanted to see money coming in after 1.5yrs they could only take it loosing thousands a month because of that.

Possibly, but what if they dump lets say 300k including the cost of new equipment, staff to configure it (wish that would be me but they arent advertising for network admins in London yet) physical expansion and possibly getting the servers to thier respective regions so the devs can configure them.

Then the game flops again, and they close down, because we all know 2.0 is its last lifeline, they have to make that extra 300k from somewhere it will take them awhile to recover from that kind of loss.

Well you have to weigh the pros and cons and only SE can do that, like you say we have no idea the cost that would be entailed and that's kind of going out of the scope of this discussion.

This is not the first time this discussion has come up, people have asked for regional and language based servers for a while and lets not forget that the JP forum had a thread talking about it also, its not just us uncivilised westerners that want this segregation.

If the game flops it flops, but I don't think you can make decisions based on fear of the worst happening, of course you don't' throw money away either, but having regional servers would be more of an investment, lets not forget SE have Dragon quest X on the horizon also.

I play DCUO on and off, if I play until 2am on the EU servers, from midnight there is hardly anyone on, this is what regional servers are like, don't play at the same time as other people an be doomed to solo until you stop playing, I could go back and forth between the reasons why we should not have regional servers all day, the only counter is ever that we will have lower latecy, while that is important, I do not want to see linkshells and friends torn apart, if they offer a choice I would be ok with that, but I really don't see servers being in the specific regions mainly because of the cost of implementing it.

I just don't want people for regional servers convincing SE to only use regional servers because it will tear friends and linkshells apart, and if I cannot play with my friends across the pond and anywhere else I might as well quit, there are people I paticularly want to play with waiting on PS3 release, and if I can't I will ragequit the second its announced.

Nevermind I just realised a flaw in what we are asking for.

Regional based servers would severely reduce the functionality of cross world content finder, so its unlikely they would do that.

Hmm I didn't think of that one lol so yeah with the cross world content finder we would still have the problems.
