No, it's really easy to start a new storyline. All the Scions (remaining?) and the WOL need to be told that there was a summoning somewhere they haven't been and an investigation starts, leading us where ever SE wants.Clearly, the answer should be a time skip of a few months/years that results in things changing enough to where new political threats have appeared that we will band together to defeat. For the Scions at this point are basically the world's peacekeeping force, and for the world to be at peace will require people to not be people. But since people are people, the struggle never ends.
Assuming we're even going to have primal summonings anymore after 6.3. Stormblood and Shadowbringers have proven for the most part that we don't really need primals anymore to move the story forward.
I honestly don't think they may keep the Scions as Main Characters for the first part of Season 2 storyline. My guess is that Season 2 storyline begins in 7.0 more with WoL finally going back to his/her roots of being a actual Adventurer but through the course of the new journey where WoL meets new allies that will journey with him/her on his/her new adventure, he/she gets involved with something that threatens the world. Only after that they begin reintroducing the Scions through the course of maybe halfway in 7.0 MSQ or during 7.X to 7.55 MSQ so that the 7.0 can focus on establishing itself to be a new and separate storyline from the Season 1 Storyline (aka Zodiark Saga) along with establishing the new characters that WoL will be meeting and adventuring with.Clearly, the answer should be a time skip of a few months/years that results in things changing enough to where new political threats have appeared that we will band together to defeat. For the Scions at this point are basically the world's peacekeeping force, and for the world to be at peace will require people to not be people. But since people are people, the struggle never ends.
This will give them more room to focus on the new characters and life for WoL after the Zodiark Saga, provide the Scions their own time frame to move on with their life into a life they always wish to have once the Scions are no longer needed, provide some time to focus on the new locations for Season 2 since these maybe locations we have never learned anything about until recently, and establish the threat and goals of the new antagonist.

The bottom line is that the Ascians either need some degree of success, end of the day, or they need to be off the playing field.
I think 5.3 and 5.4 might actually open up some interesting avenues -- that Garlemald and the Ascians are one and the same, and the very real possibility that the unsundered Asican truly is a nihilist who wants everything to die.
I think we will be done with Primals at some point soon -- would not be surprised if 5.5x -- and the fact that the last one will probably be...
In the final cutscene in 5.3 with Zenos and Fandaniel, the impression I got was the latter was quite pleased that the last of the unsundered had been eliminated, and Zenos was pleased that it came at the hands of the WoD/WoL. It would seem that restoring Zodiark is not the goal of all Ascians, and the presence of any of the unsundered left the lower ranks having to bend to their will. I find this to be very interesting if that is the case.
It's not so much the Ascians that are hackneyed, but the Hydaelyn/Zodiark struggle. However, these are just the names associated to light and dark when you think about it. I am not sure if we will ever get away from the struggle to keep them in balance.
