I agree, what a lot perceive as a weakness is simply a difference, a point that makes it stand out and draws those interested in that, of course you'll draw people who could care less about that, but it's for them to decide if it's a deal breaker or not.
So many MMO's didn't look past "WoW is popular I'll be like WoW" but then when people asked. "But what sets you apart?" They had no answer, that's the nice thing about there being mutiple choices of what we play, one game dosen't have to appeal to everyone or try and do everything.
It's totally fine to feel that a story focus doesn't belong in an MMO, there are MMO's for those who feel that, and 14 for those that do.

It's more than just that, though. (More spoilers, this time all the way through 5.3.)

The ShB storyline actually will acknowledge if you haven't met G'raha Tia yet from your standpoint, but to explain some of his motives and reactions he does need to know and have worked with the Warrior of Light at some point beforehand in his personal timeline. So they wrote the dialogue there as though you hadn't met him yet.

However, the 5.3 MSQ ends with bringing G'raha Tia home. For the sake of the writers' sanity (and Timeline Shenanigans in general), that means you need to have met him before that happens (and he needs to already be within the Tower), which means you need to have gone through those alliance raids and completed that storyline before that part of the story occurs. Trying to make divergent stories for people who never did those raids would probably have been a maddening process.

That's almost certainly why it's a requirement to have finished the Crystal Tower raids to even start the 5.3 portion of the MSQ, even if you had gotten to 5.2 endgame without ever doing those alliance raids.

I suspect adding them as an MSQ requirement on the way to Heavensward is just a way of slipping it in as content you'll do when it's at least somewhat level-appropriate.

I aim to make my posts engaging and entertaining, even when you might not agree with me. And failing that, I'll just be very, VERY wordy.

*yawns* another "I am too special to have to do actual story... I want to just be max level without effort" thread.

look, I get it, you bore easily, after teh first couple times its dull and you are a completionist and want all the classes.

they sell skip potions , I recommend looking into them.

I dont mind the story, and often I'll see things I didnt the first couple times, its rare, but it happens. or I'll do different side quests. MSQ runs are for xp, usually a decent amount and I am willing to be a little inconvenienced for extra xp.

IF you are talking about your first time through all of this... my question is: What have you got against story? (because after the first run through with a character, you never have to see again except by choice)

There's really no reason to rush to endgame.
So you can spend a couple weeks doing savage and then afk in Limsa for 2 months?

Whereas Matsuno managed to throw in easter egg references but still make a very meaningful story without them.
It also doesn't help that Yoko Taro tends to wait until the third act to actually tell 80% of the story, and we haven't gotten the third act yet.

I hate games that use time to cap models it means less content each expansion. If you don't like the story pay for the skip

I get your point, but the story focus is what makes FFXIV special. "Condensing" it too much might render it bland and feed the wrong kind of player mindset.

Most MMORPGs simply forsake the "RPG" part and just work on this "rush to cap" mindset. Take WoW as an example: For all most players care, Blizzard could delete the open world and create just a "lobby" where you select your characters and queue for dungeons and raids, like they do with MOBAs or shooters. The story is just an obstacle preventing you to play the "real" game. That's the mindset of the players and devs alike, and I for one wouldn't want that here.

I only think ARR needs more pruning.
Removing a bunch of filler quests only to mandate completion of an entire raid series was just a terrible solution.

As much as I do enjoy the MSQ and hope it continues to be a focus for as long as the game exists, I do agree that there needs to be an easier way to on ramp newer or returning players into current content. The simplest solution would be to essentially make a storyline skip an included part of the package. Just as with the skip pot, it doesn't need to get them right to day and date current story. And it would also be great if they included professionally produced "the story so far" edited movies for those who use the skip to access, along with returning players (or old heads who just want a refresher).
