I don't feel like typing out all the details for something that people will likely think "well that's stupid as hell," but this grew out a discussion our Free Company had and we figured we'd post our little pie-in-the-sky pipe dream for 7.0 or later.

Essentially, it seems like heading to Vana'diel for 7.0 or later expansions would be a real nice way to:
- Wrap up XI's story (we've already had the two worlds cross-over; XI's final ending story could have NPCs from XIV show up in XI, while over in XIV we're traveling to that shard).
- Discontinue service for XI (playerbase dwindling year over year) to free up resources for XIV's continued development
- Provide a potential reason for XI players to join XIV if they haven't already, and would make sense with the existing XIV lore (Shards, etc).
- Acknowledge that a lot of XIV's playerbase came from XI; it's total fanservice, but that's the point.

Announcing it would be a nice way to cap off XI's 20th anniversary in 2022 as well.

In short, it allows SE to free up server and team resources (which XIV devs always say they're lacking), would be a nice way to hook the XI playerbase and the continuing XIV playerbase after the end of the Zodiark/Hydaelyn saga, and would allow XI to still be relevant even after shutting off service.

There's already plenty of references in XIV that hint at XI, even so far as to directly hint at its existence as a shard.

I dunno. Just felt like sharing. I can break down the main points and the full discussion that led to this pipe-dream, but I'd rather hear everyone else's thoughts on the matter.

To reply to you directly, I don't think they should simple shutdown FFXI and move players to FFXIV. I would much rather them do a Vanilla WoW thing. Touch up FFXI's graphics and score, maybe. Improve the UI to make it more accessible to players on PC keyboard and mouse. Then offer it as an extension to monthly subs for both FFXI and FFXIV players. One monthly sub players can play FFXIV, FFXI, or both.

And before you reply with blah blah blah, not the same worlds, blah blah blah. Just stop. FFXIV and FFT/FFXII are totally different games that the development of FFXIV crafted together with a story. FFXIV and FFXI are totally different games that the devs can merge together at anytime if they want.

This is more about personal opinions and preferences than it is about what can and can't be. I hate hate hate that Nier was added to FFXIV. I won't do the raid, period. Regards people like it and I'm sure it has a well crafted story to makes sense, but I don't agree with the decision based on my own personal opinion on collaboration.

First of all I agree that they can do whatever they want. If they want to directly connect the xi and xiv stories I’m cool with it. Being different universes does not mean there is no connection.

However the Ivalice in xiv is not the Ivalice in xii and tactics. It’s an alternate version that just happens to be part of the xiv world. The same way we have a lady named Krile who has a father figure named Galuf. I believe Neir is meant to be similar. The entirety of the Neir/Drakengard canon is not to be considered part of ffxiv.

If only FFXIV got FFXI's DNC...
