I would love to be a rice farmer in XIV.

Sakuna is an amazing game I've been playing in between Final Fantasy XIV, along with a couple other games. I've wanted to try rice farming in video games, ever since playing Bokujo Monogatari/Story of Seasons as a child and then later seeing idyllic rice fields in Japan and other places in East Asia and how pretty they looked, I wanted a farming game similar to Harvest Moon about rice. Or at least that let you grow rice or be a rice farmer.

And my wish finally came true with Sakuna. Being able to grow rice like in other farming games. A traditional Japanese setting close to nature. Themes of kami like Okami, Touhou Project, Pocky & Rocky, ect. It has a very traditional Japanese 'sacred nature' feel that I've always wanted to try. The fun of being a rice farmer without all the real world back-pain.

I don't know how taboo it is to talk about other competing video games and IP on the official Final Fantasy XIV forums. But it's a great example of another game that I wish could influence Final Fantasy XIV. I don't think Final Fantasy XIV need only take inspiration from other MMORPGs!

I really appreciate that we can grow things in Final Fantasy XIV. Video games are often so focused on destruction that it's so nice to see games based on growing or building(like Dragon Quest Builders) that are about creating, instead. Or even having mechanics that allow for the expression of creation as well as destruction.

And I've always really enjoyed housing in Final Fantasy XIV. I think it's one of the most compelling parts of the game, significantly hindered by the fact there aren't nearly enough plots of land for the number of players. And with that, comes Gardening. Gardening is something I really appreciate as a feature being available. As well I really enjoy the Disciples of Hand and Land. Creating and harvesting resources is a wonderful feeling. I wish there were more non-instanced versions of it. Where nodes randomly spring up, and housing being the only place that you can place your items. Or selling them on market boards.

Being able to harvest items and then craft them into something you can interact with in housing is an amazing feeling.

I also really like the Stormblood regions of Final Fantasy XIV. Despite the fact many found themselves disappointed with many aspects of Stormblood, mostly the story writing and frequent travel, I don't think that means writing off enjoying the Asian flair that Stormblood finally allowed people to further explore. If anything, one criticism of Stormblood is that it didn't allow you to explore them enough. Being split between so many areas, and not allowing one place to truly shine.

Eastern culture has many flaws, just like the West. But I don't think that precludes us from being able to respectfully enjoy that culture like we have with Stormblood. And I personally love that. Almost all my glamours are based around an Eastern aesthetic. And it was my favourite part of Stormblood.

I remember looking at the fields in Yanxia and wishing I could tend them and be a rice farmer there. Even just having a few nodes for sticky rice in the fields would have been nice, though not ideal.

Unfortunately, between Botany and Gardening, I'm not sure there's much room to add much more in the way of farming or growing mechanics. But I really wish there were. I still have an itch to be a farmer when in Final Fantasy XIV. And these things help, but I often wish for even more.

Final Fantasy XIV has a lot of crossovers with a lot of other games. Monster Hunter, Nier, Youkai Watch, among others. Personally, I would absolutely love to see some kind of crossover event with Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin that gives you rice farming mechanics to play with. Planting them in the right places, adjusting water levels, creating fertilizer, removing weeds. That would be so awesome!

It's not a bad idea, and there has been talk about more gardening/farming content, but I highly doubt it would be anything as deep or complex. Still, the devs have been working to add more social and non combat content to the game so who knows.

Actually devs mention gardening/farming around when Shb came out, though there hasn't been any info since. Most likely just them just playing around with the idea, vaguely remember something about minions helping out, lol.

If I remember right one of the farms in Limsa was originally made as a guild back before 1.0, but the job was cut just before release.
We almost had farming as a gathering class and I def feel the game is less without it.

Oh, that's interesting! I didn't hear about that one! I did remember that in 1.0's Ishgard area I believe, that Shepard was hinted at. Which I was really excited for. I would also love a new Disciples of Land Shepard job and am sad we never got it. I would love to tend Karakuls. I'm someone who loathes the idea of fighting Karakuls when there are logs or quests that call for it. I only want to pet and give them affection, they're so cute!

Or maybe we're thinking about the same content? I could be mistaken, 1.0 was so long ago that a lot of the rumors and planned content are still hazy to me. I remember recently rediscovering that there were planned to be player cannons and I was like "By the Twelve! That's right! There were going to be cannons! Possibly naval warfare!" and "They were close to making XIV like ArcheAge!".

Gosh, there's so many ideas from 1.0 that have been left in the past that I would love to see them expand upon.

It's also interesting to hear that they mentioned expanding upon farming/gardening content when Shadowbringers came out. I don't remember or know exactly what was said, perhaps they just meant Ishgard Restoration? It's exciting to consider that they've been considering expanding this type of content. I really hope they do so.

They've done plenty to refine and expand upon combat content. So it would be great to see non-combat 'farming' type content get the same treatment.

Pardon me, but how does this feel racist? I'm very sensitive about this subject and about how I talk about Japanese or other East Asian cultures because there are people in the past who bulled me online for liking "Japanophile" esque things and calling me names for wanting to learn Japanese or enjoying certain aspects of their culture. People would tell me that "wanting to learn Japanese is cringe and "weeb" and things like that". So I always try to be careful with how I word things. That's why I mentioned and prefaced that I think it should be possible to respectfully appreciate other cultures. And also mentioned that I don't think Eastern culture is perfect and that all cultures have problems. Because there are people who accused those who are interested in aspects of Japanese culture of "thinking that Japan is a perfect paradise". So having those accusations throw my way in the past, I pre-empted that accusation by saying I don't think cultures are better than others. That's the only reason I brought it up.

Don't tell me despite this you think I'm fetishizing and appropriating Japanese or Asian culture right now for enjoying the sort of content that Sakuna or enjoying the sort of culture that games like Okami and Touhou Project have? Are you accusing me of Orientalism and Fetishism right now?

I'm very sensitive about these accusations because people used to call me all sorts of names because of my interests. And I always try to appreciate cultures instead of appropriate them. I'm very careful with my wording and intentions because of past experiences. If, despite my best and ongoing efforts, you feel that this is racist in any way, what reason do you have for feeling as such? Honestly, I just want to be able to enjoy what I enjoy. And it rather feels like walking on eggshells, because I'm concerned that no matter how much effort I take, people will consider it racist if I appreciate Japanese culture. Or any East Asian culture.

I haven't said that Japanese culture is unique or better than my culture. Or Nihonjinron perspectives of a 'uniqueness' to Japan in comparison to the West or anywhere else. I haven't expressed a desire to move to Japan, or Asia. I didn't say that the people of a country are more attractive than another. I didn't say that Japan was some kind of paradise. Or act as if Japan or anywhere in Asia is lacking in problems in comparison to the West. Or any kind of ideal. I didn't speak of Japanese culture in a remotely derogatory or mocking fashion of any kind. I didn't say that Japanese culture shouldn't be respectfully approached.

I thought of every single thing, based on past experiences, where this could have gone wrong and sounded offensive or orientalist, and avoided it. Where did this become racist?
