Issues with the Playstation 4 controller and Steams contoller options

    Hello,

I've been recently having issues with my DS4's deadzones and general use on 14, I can't seem to fix it myself too.

Here's the rundown, I've been playing 14 on PC for about a month, specifically the Steam version, exclusively with a DS4. Initially I had the problem of my character not going perfectly straight when tilting the stick forward, after doing some research I discovered Steam's Big Picture Mode and the options it gave you, using said options I forced on controller support and added a cross shaped deadzone for both sticks to prevent the said stick issue, working perfectly for a time. Fast forward to today, I think I may have accidentally deleted the validation files or whatever they're called for all my steam games, annoying but easy to fix, as it just requires you to install the games again, but instead of installing, steam just adds back the files, but with 14, I had to do a full reinstall of the game through the launcher, even though all the files were already there. After the install the game worked fine with the DS4, even played through the new dungeon as a RDM with a perfect rotation, it was only after the dungeon I noticed something was up with my deadzones, it was back to my character walking slanted, like how when I just installed 14, but after disabling and enabling controller support in big picture mode to try and fix this, 14 recognised the DS4, but it wouldnt work at all! And its not a controller issue, it works fine with New Vegas and Payday 2. The only way I can get it to work is by turning off Controller Configuration in the games Steam options, but that just creates the issue of deadzones again. let me give you a list of solutions I have tried so far:

1.Removing the controller drivers from Windows 10 and downloading them again

2.Deleting the Steam folder for FF14 and doing a fresh install, as I had thought the reinstall thanks to the validation issue might've caused this

3.Going into my user data folder and deleting the controller registration folder, starting over with the DS4, and fiddling with Big Picture mode again

    4.Restarting my PC

I'd also like to say that all the necessary options are enabled in 14, in game controller sensitivity has been changed with no benefit with Steams settings turned off.

That's all the info I can give at the top of my head, long winded, but when I read through other technical support requests one of the things that the SE Rep asks is for more info so better safe then sorry. I'd also like to apologise if this is purely a steam issue, I posted this here as I feel its related to FF14 more, as the deadzones worked at one point with steams options enabled.

Good morning and thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums

Does this issue occur if a different controller is used? Additionally dos it help if the controller is recalibrated controller in the System Configuration Menu under the Gamepad Settings tab? Please also keep in mind that the PS4 controller is not officially supported for use on Windows. We advise to use a XInput controller if possible.

Steam controller settings lets you calibrate the dead zones of the sticks. PlayStation controllers are much too sensitive by default.

Make the dead zones bigger and it will help.

Also if you're getting weird jerkiness you may be getting SIXAXIS inputs as well. You can avoid that by using the Default Controller preset rather than the PlayStation one.

Yes, no DS4 I own works with Steams settings anymore. As for recalibration, I tried it and it still doesn't seem to work with the settings enabled.

The problem is, to make the deadzones bigger I need to enable controller support in Steam under 14 which breaks the controller when playing 14, only way to use it is to turn it off, but as I said in the post the jank deadzones come back. Maybe because Steam is recognizing it as a honest to God DS4 and not a Xbox controller and thusly FF14 is freaking the hell out when its plugged in as it only supports Xinput devices? Idk, just throwing stuff out there

I think you are indeed experiencing Xinput/DirectInput conflicts. Steam does recognize PS controllers as PS controllers by default and will treat them as DirectInput devices, not Xinput. The game is likely expecting Xinput. You can have Steam spoof the Xinput driver by selecting the Xbox Configuration and disabling the PlayStation configuration.
