I think there should be challenging content, but i dont want to go back to the days where just to get to the next level at 15 I had to party with a whack of people and perform my role well for 2 hours just to get level 16. Plus their was role descrimination. I played thief, people didn't want thief. I quit because I couldn't play by myself and feel like I was progressing, and had to rely way to much on others to enjoy the game which yes partying was fun, but not everyone feels like co-ordinating hard battles all the time as "Fun". I eventually ended up quitting because everyday it took me an horu to get in a party and spent so much time fighting crabs it seemed pointless. I like that FFXIV let's me enjoy that game on my own or with others, don't strip the solo away just because it's an "MMO" I don't want my solo experience strictly to be crafting and mining as it was in ffxi

Because it was fun, all complaining aside. In the end it was *worth* it.

This is what PLers actually believe. May Altana have mercy on our souls...

You mean those games that now require 20% of the time it once did to complete them for the same money? Or, in this case, 20% of the time to access that "fun" content, complete it, and then redefine your fun as incessant repetition?

Cracked, is what you people are.

so, taking forever to do something = fun?

So for you, going to Disneyland you go at the very busiest day of the very busiest season, because that way the line will be REALLY long, thus making the ride feel that much more worth it because it was such a pain in the ass to get on...?

No, Jake. It's not about taking forever. It's about it requiring just enough time to be able to appreciate your progression. And by progression, I mean the trip from Lv1 to cap. I'll say again, if you find that trip boring or useless, then why play an RPG? Or, at least what is supposed to be an RPG?

    Actually,

I get bored ridiculously easy, I played WoW for years, each expansion gave something more to do, WoTLK was the start of a downward spiral.

On the fun o meter I have to put every single MMO I've ever played for more than 1 month ahead of XI. (Everquest, DaOC, Warhammer, Aion, SWTOR, WoW, Ragnarok Online. I even had more fun on PSO 1/v2.)

You're cracked. All the time you spend grinding to get from point A to point B could be spent on better things. FF was never about a mindless grind, it was about a purposeful grind.

    Example: FF7

You leveled ridiculously easy, you didn't need to grind content to keep up in strength wise for the main quest, however you did need to spend time developing power to engage some of the extra content. As a plus to this however, the extra content had a point, a story.

    The following extras were available:

Materia Summons, Weapons, Secret Players, Ultima Weapons, Various Mini Games, Hidden Items, Puzzles strewn throughout dungeons.

FF7 alone has more content than XIV, and it's loads of fun to play, or was until the 20th time. You have a point with repetition, but had SE brought it's A-Game to the fight with XIV, took the things we loved (not the masochistic ones mind you as they actually sent a lot of players packing) on XI, and melded them into modernized models we would be fine.

Sad thing about FF7 is it was not the most interesting FF title by far, and every other title stacked up against the generic yucky feelings that both XI/XIV give off in the FF bloodline excluding Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and FF XIII totally makes XI/XIV look like red headed step children in great family of games.

Level X - X should not be the point of my gaming experience.

Acquiring gear, tweaks to my abilities through quests (which pleases me about the current direction of the job models), mounts, titles, friends, unlocking other jobs, pvping, advanced pve'ing against challenging foes giving rewards in the form of either high amounts of currency or some manner of tokens for advanced gears.

Those things sound a lot more entertaining than a blah blah blah repeat grind of the same stupid pulls of the same mobs cause people won't even fan out and explore other enemy camps.

    The XI Model was silly.

Solo 1-20. Desert, Jungle, Tower, Stranger Jungle, done.

The most interesting things on XI were unlocking jobs, Dyanamis, sometimes besieged, unlocking summons on Summoner, AF quests, Subjob cap increases and whatnot.

Was it truly the boring grind you found fun? Or the challenges at checkpoint levels to unlock the next step or phase in your hero's power? Seems like SE knew the answer. Remember there was going to be NO LEVELS in this game, they were going to make it a pure group/questing experience where your hero is developed by trials. That of course was a tad extreme, why they abandoned the thing that makes FF, FF (adventure) who knows.

QED. Don't ask for a tougher grind. Ask for a tougher challenge. Grind is Yawn. Challenging mobs, moderately lengthy quest lines with awesome rewards, unlocking new powers and degrees of skill, unlocking tweaks to ability and appearance all sound a LOT MORE FUN....than Crab Grinding, Sprout Grinding, Miscellaneous Ghost Grinding, and strange Bird who steals my food effects grinding...just saying.

EDIT: WOOPS...forgot about stupid Monkeys and Bees grinding.

It's about it requiring just enough time to be able to appreciate your progression.
It's totally subjective how long that is. It depends entirely on how much you actually enjoy grinding. Most people don't, thus in most non-free-to-play games, the time to level up has been getting shorter.

For me, it's not the leveling up itself that's most enjoyable. It's the stuff you do when you're NOT leveling up (whether you're capped out or not). For XIV, all there is to do is the storyline, which you can only do once, and one lower-level instanced raid. Since there's nothing to do along the way, I'd rather get to the top as fast as possible (guildleves here and there do help break up the monotony a bit) so I can do the more varied and interesting stuff.

Most people play an RPG for the battles or the story. Most people don't play an RPG specifically for the level up process and the grinding it requires.
