I also wanted to mention in my previous post that the voice acting seemed a bit off. I don’t know if it was because the actors were working from home or what, but it seemed overly dramatic and uneven in parts.

Also, there seemed to be some different voice actors for some of the characters. Cid, Matoya, Merlwyb and Raubahn all sounded different to me.

They definitely have a more Mhachi design to the towers, but parts do have that distinct Garlean look. I'm guessing Fandango had something to do with them being made, so... yes they could be something the Mhachi used long ago, just updated!

I usually lurk these threads, but a fun post-msq an observation a friend made that, save for a couple of areas, was true:

All of the towers are in areas where we've fought Primals OR have a beast tribe presence. The only areas I didn't see the towers in were North Shroud, Central Coerthas, East Shroud, and Sea of Clouds. The towers can be seen from any aetheryte you port into, and they're pretty hard to miss.

The locations we saw them at were in Southern Thanalan (closest to Forgotten Springs, almost directly easy by the Amaljaa encampment where the fate Blood, Augur, Hex, ....whateverthelastoneis spawns), South Shroud (closest to Camp Tranquil), Dravanian Forelands (by the entrance to the Hinterlands; can't be seen in the Hinterlands), Yanxia (past Castrum Fluminis), The Lochs (down by Sothward, closest to Porta Praetoria), and of course the one by Nym in La Noscea.

The fact that they're all in areas where there are beast tribe presence OR where we've had a trial against a Primal really stood out to us; why it's like that can be coincidence or they're using these areas for concentrated aether to power their Mass Tempering GarleanMhachiAmaurotianAmhacarlean Machines to temper people who get too close to them. After all, Black Rose is no longer a thing, how else do you make a lot of people lose their minds?

    Nier:

I DO NOT LIKE THIS, SAM I AM. The entire time during the Echo recall with Konogg, I was going "oh no. Oh No. Oh NO.... OH NO! NOOOOO NO NO NO BAD BAD NO!!!" because the formula and what the orb IS: a Seed of Destruction, seen when the end of the world is nigh, and the being inside comes out bent on destroying the world. That's bad times.

The story went where I wasn't expecting, and I'm not sure how to feel about it beyond INTERNAL SCREAMING UNTIL 5.5 because what we learned, what they introduced... that's a lot and pretty heavy. Let's hope Yoko Taro doesn't get to delete a Data Center!

    Role quests:

Time travel from the msq and Shard hopping from this. I don't think they'll have us Shard hopping as another xpac, but I do feel it'll be a Chronicles-type quest to bring aetherical balance back to the 13th. As has been pointed out, Taynor and Unukalhai's eyes... hmmmm. I do like that Unukalhai finally made a friend and gained a single dad though! Poor kid needs some friends and some care by a bounty hunting single dad Cerigg lmao. I'm curious to see where this will go.

    I think that:

It might be a set up for side content plans in 6.0.

Like how the war with Garlemald went from primary focus of Stormblood to side content like Werlyt and Bozja in Shadowbringers. Similarly I could see shard-hopping dimension-saving shenanigans being the foundation for the trial series and relic weapons in the next expansion.

It felt that we found tempering cure a bit too easy. Althought I lived the comedy bit in Azys Lla.

Aymeric giving away ceruleum with a light hand was not a great political move...

Matoya's Relic reminded me of Fractal Continuum rather than Brayflox's Longstop Yoshida mentioned. Was milk drop boss analogue to fae folk on the first?

Fandaniel was giving me serious Karasu wibes...

Telophoroi - Endbringers? As in more than just Fandaniel?

When you to talk to dig site chief to complete quest he says that he found them both in these very tunnels years ago, so maybe both of them are not what we thought they were?

I believe Yoshi-P spoke about this earlier in the year. He said that the recordings for this patch had to be done from the voice actors homes, so most likely what you are hearing is their voice recorded in a different environment. He also implied that this was the most difficult thing to set up when shifting to working from home during the pandemic.

Alisae as a hacker was awesome, even if it didn't work out.
I loved getting to see Matoya again, and her dungeon. Heck, I loved seeing the whole FF1 cast on the walls of the final room (but where was the Armoire of Invincibility?)
Fandaniel was neat; I wish he was around for more than one cutscene. I'm going to be shocked if is motive really is 'destroy it all for the lolz'. I'm glad this thread came up with the translation of 'Endbringers'; all I could figure out from google is that Telophorous is a genus of birds.
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT LYSE POSSIBLY BEING DEAD? Granted, it doesn't make a lot of sense that she'd die from a single sword stroke plus fade to black. But then, Varis died the same way, a few patches back! And was surrounded by *way* more healers and doctors than Lyse was!

Decent fight. And maybe, unlike Ruby Weapon, I won't feel compelled to ignore Trial Roulette for a patch too - we'll see how it goes next week.
Did Gaius know that was his data in Emerald Weapon? He sure didn't react to it much, if so.
At some point, Valens Van Varro crossed the line from villainy to cartoonish-super-villainy, and I just couldn't take him seriously anymore. Probably the expression on his face. Up until that point, he's the NPC I've most wanted to kill in a computer game, ever.

And I was ridiculed in 5.0 when I said Gaia was an Ascian. Who's laughing now?
I understand that's Cloud of Darkness's Disidia appearance? I was bummed she didn't get her own theme music. Or even just Hungerer again. It's one of FF's best boss themes.
Cylva was a giant wolf monster? ... maybe I should have paid more attention to the old role quests.
Evil Thancred didn't make a lot of sense to me lorewise. Also, I managed to clear without anyone in the party figuring out how those red and blue circles worked.
The majority of the last fight, where we see the 6 former primals, was amazing. The cutscene bits were nice - once - but grew really grating the second time, when we wiped around 30%; I can't imagine listening to them every week.
Someone in our raid called out "rest your weary soul in my 20 bosoms" and it made my day.
Apparently 'Ultimecia' is better translated as 'Artimecia'? And there was a lot more FF8 symbolism in that last fight, that completely went over my head.
It was good to see that the Ascians were capable of love, even back in the day. And that they'll be reincarnated, hopefully sans evil and/or Tempering.

    Moving onward
It seemed really weird that all the patch's sarcastic responses and item descriptions were in Ununkulhai's followup quest.
Along those lines - with it being optional and highly gated - and "possibly taking years" - it looks like we can rule out going to the 13th for 6.0. Or maybe ever.
Why didn't we introduce Gaia to them? She's from the 13th too, I thought? Maybe in 5.5.
We had a number of mentions of Sharlayan, and one very noticeable one of the Moon. Possible 6.0 destinations?
If we're directly continuing the 5.4 plot in 6.0, it would seem to mostly be about Beastmen relations. I'm not sure how that would lend itself to exploring a new continent, which seems to be almost a requirement. Though it *is* supposedly going to be called 'Forspoken'; and 'Spoken' is 14's word for 'player character races'. Perhaps about expanding the definition of 'Spoken' to actually include everyone? Or, less optimistically, an all-out Beastman war?
No idea with the towers. They don't seem like a single-patch threat. It really looks like they do tempering, and we've conveniently just got ourselves a cure for tempering. Which would mean I guess they could be following WoW's modus operandi of "Your steadfast ally just went crazy, and now you've gotta fight them" - though at least we'd be curing them instead. If they indeed bring about "the final Days", it would be through rampant Summoning. The Twelve, perhaps? I dunno.

So the route of this word is two compound Greek words.

    First is Telos--which means "end"

Second is Phoro--which means "carrying or bearing"

So the meaning of the word is "End-bearer" literally, but translates more appropriately as "Those who bring the End" and the "of the world" part is implied due to context of the story.

The 'i" at the end makes this plural, so there are more than one.

It's ironic that this wasn't easily translated by English speakers in America, as we expect people who learn English as a second language in America to learn all the important Greek and Latin route words--which both of these are apart of.

It's always a weird time during a major MSQ patch, since I can't really play through everything in one go. I need time to digest, and I don't have that much uninterrupted playtime either.

So that means for reaction threads like this, I first go through MSQ on Patch Tuesday, then the major sidestory questline/Trial on Wednesday or Thursday, and then the Raids (8-man or 24-man) on the weekends. Which means I have to keep starting over from the beginning of this thread, "unlocking" the various spoiler blocks as time goes by.

According to the lorebook, the remnants of the VIIth were basically executed/slaughtered by the incoming XIVth after the Calamity, as part of Gaius taking over Castrum Centri (formerly Castrum Novum). I don't know if this was a literal order, or if some of the more useful ex-VIIth soldiers were given a choice between joining the XIVth or being killed. But overall the old VIIth was reduced to such a low number (that number possibly being zero) that it's much easier to make a new legion from scratch.

So I can imagine the current VIIth is essentially a "new" legion, even if it was theoretically possible for someone to be from the old VIIth, possibly passing through a stint in the XIVth along the way.

(No new information or spoilers in my spoiler-block, but I'm putting it in one due to context.)

I admit that line had the distinct whiff of retcon. Not a big or major one, but just more experienced writers looking back at their old stuff and going "wow, that did not age well", and trying to cover it up with a plausible-sounding backstory. You can clearly see the seams if you look closely, but to be honest I can't blame them; lore and dialogue operate under the constraints of game mechanics and development deadlines.

Still, it's in the game now, so I'll accept it as the actual situation between Gaius and Livia. And it even makes sense in hindsight why Gaius never said anything about Livia in the Praetorium, even though we literally killed her to gain access to the place.

When the Telophoroi were first mentioned
my immediate thought was that Fandaniel has all the other sundered Ascians on his side and that's what they renamed themselves. I have nothing to back this up with but it's where my mind first went.

I rather hope I'm wrong though because I think it would be more interesting if we temporarily teamed up with the remaining Ascians to stop him, before turning back to fighting them once Fandaniel is gone.

Interesting that the Southern Thanalan tower is tiny, while the Forelands one is colossal in size
