Well we do know that somewhere in between Ala Mhigo falling and now, Sharlayan in the northwest was attacked by the Garleans as well and is currently a smoldering pit of nothing. Sharlayan's on the opposite side of Alenard from Ala Mhigo. So along with skipping over Gridania, they skipped over Ishgard, Dravania, and the Hellsguard civilization in Ablathia's Spine. I wonder how that falls into their plans. We do know that Dravania is where the dragons come from, so does that have anything to do with the dragons besides Midgardsormr that were at the battle over the lake? Lots of questions and few answers so far.

As far as where the place is supposed to be in that opening cutscene, I think it's just a random CG mock-up of a guild made to show elements of the game and isn't supposed to represent any one place. Or it could be Sharlayan.

I don't think so, since as you noted, it is a smoldering piece of nothing in the present, which is when the cutscene in the guild hall takes place. CG mock up seems the most likely explanation to me.
