Pronouns?

Hey Y'all!

I was wondering if anybody knows if there is a way to set or change your own pronouns in game, or if there is a way to note them to others without explicitly stating them?

I would like to go by They/Them pronouns in game, as this game has been one of the only spots I feel safe being myself.

I am sure there are other folks who are interested in finding out how to do this, or folks who want to see it implemented in some way if it's not already in game.

Pronouns are based directly on your character's gender, not set separately, and some scenes have gender-based differences beyond just "insert pronoun here".

Pronouns in story script or when NPCs talk about you: correlates with you character's sex. F: she, her, etc. M: he, him, etc.

Pronouns when other players talk about you: just put them in search info comment or something.

I was asking if it was a thing, or if other people wanted to see something minor like that. I wasn't demanding it be in game. I wasn't suggesting that such a feature should take priority over other content. I also don't think talking about things we think would be cool is an odd thing, given how many resources the developers put into things like making sure hats work for Viera... or adding Mahjong to the game. There are plenty of things devs could put more or less time into, and I'm not demanding anything. I'm literally only saying I think it would be cool.

This is not minor. This would require thousands of changes to dialogue and localizing over many languages that have actual gendered language. ... Which is why it likely won't be seen.

Well, it might or might not be, depending on how the dialogue system is implemented.

If the dialogue is stored with each line like "I warned {firstname}, I told {m=him|f=her} this would happen." or if you store separate gendered versions of the entire line, then it would indeed be thousands of changes to dialogue. But if the dialogue is stored like "I warned {firstname}, I told {objp} this would happen.", then you just need to define one new set of objective, subjective, possessive, etc. pronouns, and boom, the dialogue's changed globally. I have no idea which way they did it.

Truthfully, I suspect they did it the first way, but it's not entirely relevant. Because even if you didn't have to change thousands of lines in the text dialogue, where it would likely get problematic is that they do seem to have a toggle to switch between two voice lines when the WoL is referenced by a pronoun, and if you added a third set of potential non-gendered pronouns those would all need to get an additional version recorded. Which is where it would absolutely become complicated to do. Especially in cases where the original voice actor for those lines is no longer contracted with SquareEnix (i.e., the Realm Reborn voice cast) or has since passed away (like Yugiri's Heavensward VA, or Honoroit's VA).
