Cool Apple Silicon M1 initial testing

Hi all! I just got my MacBook Pro 13'' with Apple Silicon (M1 chip) and 16GB RAM.
I downloaded the MAC version of FF14 directly from Square Enix (I didn't do steam originally) and it worked flawlessly.
I obviously still need to do more testing than simply running around and attacking a few mobs. I'll update this thread if I find any issues or crashes.

This includes the warning from SE to not upgrade to Big Sur. I didn't have a choice here with Apple Silicon but I'm glad to report it seems to be working. I noticed people struggling with the steam version so I don't know what is different about that version but downloaded directly from SE shows it works fine so far.

Hope this helps someone! Comment your experiences if you've tested more than I have so far and had issues!

I'd be curious to know what sort of FPS you're getting in various environments and window/fullscreen resolutions as well as what graphics settings you're going with in XIV itself.

I'd also love to see the activity monitor graphs for processor load while playing, considering how many layers the game has to play through (32bit win directx9 client -> TransGaming/Wine wrapper -> Rosetta 2) to run on M1.

And of course, we all need to know if the bottom of the M1 MBP will sear the flesh off your legs if you play XIV with it on your lap, or if the M1 really does run as cold as reviewers have been saying.

Some other sites have been running stress test on them and say they hardly get hot. The desktop one (mac mini I think?), it's cooling fan didn't even kick in during testing.

These new macs are surprisingly amazing for gaming and basically perform just as well as a PC of comparable cost and build. It’s weird to say that about a Mac

Without a dedicated graphics card that is absolutely false. Call me back when a Mac can handle 4k ray tracing AAA titles at 120 fps.

The fact their first generation apple silicon already greatly surpassed intel integrated is amazing in itself. The apple gpu has performance similar to a gtx 1650.

Sounds like Apple is trying again to pull gamers into their world of planned obsolescence and forced product replacement with their computers. Gamers are one of the largest electronic consumer markets they haven't been able to really make a splash into. The main hinderances being Mac OS which results in either having to partition a windows OS part of the storage drive or running a virtual machine within Mac OS to run windows in order to play most titles at launch coupled with most PC gamers being smart enough tech wise to see through the gimmicks they use to sell to other markets while having the knowledge needed to know they can match the actual performance playing game software on a PC for less money initially and can simply upgrade specific components as they want to or need to in the future rather than toss the whole thing out and buy a whole new system.

I don't think so. Gaming on *any* laptop be it Windows, OS X, or Linux is less than optimal.

Some (many) people use computers for tasks other than gaming. That a low power-draw laptop can also run games in a pinch is a bonus. Saves needing to carry two devices when traveling. The new Macbooks are proving to be capable all rounders, and with around 20 hours of battery they provide a good amount of portability.

Nothing wrong with a powerful desktop and a day-on-a-charge laptop.
