SE doesn't make a habit of revoking what players already spent time collecting in accordance with the game rules.

they need to invoke the ability for it to affect them... Entire wards could open up with a simple click

SE would consider taking away earned rewards as unethical and won't consider doing it. They would also consider it anti-fun, which would work against their business model. Less fun = less players = less money.
