Random crashes, mostly happening during loading screens (17)

Hello,

since 5.2/5.3 I'm encountering random crashes.
Sometimes I can play for hours without any problems but sometimes I suddenly encounter those random crashes.

These crashes mostly occur during loading screens and I get following Error:

"An unexpected error has occured. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV.(17)"

Sometimes it helps to relog, but most of the time the game instantly crashes during the loading screen, again (right after choosing my character)
The curious thing is, that I usually can login with another char but once I try to log in with the original character I get the boot, again.

Yesterday I was able to reproduce the crash.
At first I tried to port with my main character to the Wolves' Den Pier (PvP Area) and the game crashed. It stuck in the loading screen and the error message appeared but for some reason I still was able to use the Chat just fine, until I "accept" the error message in Windows.

Then I logged in with my old char just fine and tried to teleport to the Wolves' Den Pier, again and guess what, I got the error message, again and the game crashed. (again stuck in the loading screen)
Even restarting the computer and closing some programs in Windows didn't help.
The only thing that helped me was to switch to DX9 (I usually use DX11). After switching to DX9 I could login, again.

This crash doesn't exclusively occur when porting to Wolves' Den Pier but it seems to happen everytime when I try to go there.

Apparently I'm not the only person who somes experiences these crashes (found someone on Reddit who has the exact same problem and a buddy from my FC told me, he get's those crashes, too (occasionally)

To prevent repeating previously attempted troubleshooting, what have you tried to alleviate the problem? Does this crash happen when Final Fantasy XIV is the only program running? Also, could you provide a system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Hi Rhaervis,

like I already wrote in the initial post, I tried following things:

-Relogging
-Restarting the PC
-closing programs like Discord and Logitech G HUB (Keyboard and Mouse settings)
-Switching FF14 from DX11 to DX9

The latter one did help the last time I had this problem and was trapped in loadingscreen->crash hell.

Keep in mind, that this problem started to occur with 5.2 or 5.3. Before that everything was fine for me.

Does this crash occur on one specific character? Or does it occur when traveling to that specific location?

It occured on 2 different Characters.
Happened when I tried to teleport to Wolves' Den Pier (that's what I meant by being able to reproduce that error)

Like I said, the only way to fix it, was to switch to DX9

Could you try deleting the locally saved content if it happens again? Go to the 'My Documents' folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV), then restart the game.

Alright,
Since I have two characters, I tried to login to the one (Cortasha Shadowwraith) that has been stuck in the loading error.
As expected the game crashed, again and following error popped up : "An unexpected error has occured. Exiting Final Fantasy XIV.(17)"

Then I proceeded with deleting all the locally saved content (like you asked me to do so).
After that I tried to log in with Cortasha, again and the game crashed, like the other times.

Just to make sure, did I login with Aryn Wraithverge (which was located in "New Gridania") and the game loaded normally but I expect that IF I port back to the Wolves' Den Pier, the game will most likely crash, again.

Good morning and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Have any changes happened to the device before the issue began? We would also like to recommend several other troubleshooting steps:

1) Make sure that your hardware is not overheating and remove any overclocks you may have on your graphics card or processor. Please check that any fans or vents are clear of blocks.
2) Disable any additional programs that could cause interference with the game itself including chat programs. Also, remove any custom configurations made using graphics driver-level programs
3) Remove any mods or injectors from the game or system
4) Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations. Find the executable file for the game (normally found in the install folder), right-click it and select 'Properties'. Under the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box labeled 'Disable Fullscreen Optimizations', then click 'Apply'.
5) Remove any unnecessary USB or audio devices (controllers, headphones, flash drives etc.)
6) Update and reinstall the drivers for your graphics card
7) Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything
8) Install Steam, Windows and FINAL FANTASY XIV onto the same drive.
