I don't think the game can handle the concept of you not being equipped with some kind of primary weapon or tool, even temporarily while it removes the traded-in item from your inventory and gives you the new one.
I'm more surprised that the spaghetti code can't flag one step or part of a job quest as "any class". Or even break it into separate parts, such as "BLM Relic Quest (BLM) -> Upgrade Relic for BLM (any class) -> BLM Relic Quest (BLM) continues. They've done it where a DoW quest unlocks the next chain which is DoH/L. You can also upgrade tome weapons while not on the same class. I wonder what in the code is restricting them.
If you could hand in just that step while on another class, the weapon in question would be sitting in your armory and there'd be no issue.

I would guess that the quests are job-restricted because of however they identify which job you are and which weapon to give you, or which to request for the trade. Maybe if you aren't the right job it can't process that correctly and asks you to trade in your current job's relic weapon instead of the one you're actually working on.I'm more surprised that the spaghetti code can't flag one step or part of a job quest as "any class".
