NPC themed characters. How true to their lore should players have them?

We've all seen players who've created characters that look like certain npcs. Even named them as those characters. So, my questions to you all is how closely do you want those people to portray them to how they are shown in game? Would you be ok for instance someone as Haurchefant never unlocking gladiator and then upgrading to Paladin while also running around nude all the time and having a completely different personality than he does in game? Or let's say a couple who've made characters that in game have a father daughter type bond, but said players have plans to have them get married and say things to each other romantically?

I myself don't mind people making said characters and role-playing as them. I however don't like it if for instance if I run across someone who's rping as Y'shtola who is acting all pervy and running around in only a bikini bottom. I am fine though with those who are currently are not on a job that character wouldn't be while also having said job/class unlocked.

I really don't care what other players do, especially since I don't RP. If I was an active RP I would ignore them and take them as impersonators I guess.

Most of the people who role-play as a canon character are pretty weird, I've found. Not to mention predatory - I've seen more than one version of a certain red haired cat boy and a certain silver haired elezen use their 'position' to pressure fans into sleazy role-play.

Not necessarily in-game but over Twitter and Tumblr.

While I never got involved with the 18+ community in RP, I have done a fair bit of RPing in my life, and never not once have I seen someone "pressure" their peers into RPing with a character's "status." It's more often than not just a desire to put that character in situations the writers never would, rather than any kind of predatory agenda.

Nah, the real predators are the ones who actively seek out people below 18 to RP with. Those types do exist and they don't need any kind of status to pull it off, just a little lying or obscuring of their IRL age.

As for the actual topic in the thread: I'm never going to diss RPers for RPing as long as they don't get in other people's way. It's just a form of escapism like another and MMO's have a really good foundation to RP on, although the chatroom nature of it leaves me, personally, to not want to engage. Them pretending to be canon characters of any kind is nothing new to me as I've experienced this phenomenon for years on other platforms, too.

...I wish I was more socially inclined or had different standards for RP so I could get myself an XIV boyfriend :c

Whenever I see someone named after an existing character, whether from FFXIV or another game (there was a Cloudx Strifex somewhere or other the other day, as an example), I generally just roll my eyes and don't pay any special attention to them. In my headcanon it's just someone who happens to share a name with a celebrity and not that character. I don't really roleplay though because it always makes me overthink the actions my character should take and then the situation moves forward and I end up doing nothing.

I would prefer them to be as true to the canon as possible if they are RPing freestyle with passersby in public. But most of the time I think canon character RP happens in the company houses and honestly in private RP I don't care what people do. It's their thing, let them have fun.

Keeping in mind, of course, that I think 90% of people with canon character look-alikes do it just for the fun of having character lookalikes and don't actually RP with them at all.

Japanese/French Haurchefant - who admires the WOL's chiselled body and wants them to come up to his bedroom to get warm?
American Haurchefant - who doth speakesth admirably about his hope incarnate's skill?

Well, since no one has the means to control another player's character, it is a rather moot question. However, on WoW's roleplaying servers, it's considered bad form to roleplay a named NPC.

Such people tend to be ostracised regardless if they are playing their characters true to the lore or not. I feel it would not be any different here.

I'd probably be more concerned about those players who design and name their characters after NPCs from other games. But then, I don't give a care to what other players do to design or name their characters (except I find some names for which I am a bit, um, unenthusiastic.)

I don't have to put them on my friends list nor engage them in an RP session, after all.

My first love died in my arms (well, while holding hands) during HW.

Everyone that looks like him is merely a ghostly reflection.
