    I have been wondering ....

I started back when HW was being announced and was late to getting to it, because I took a break and came back half way through HW and had to catch up and finish ARR.

I am now level 80 and have been here ever since. Caught up with all the latest content.

I like my BLM. I like how far I have come with my character.

But I was disappointed by my money habits and find my self increasingly poor. So I came up with an idea - I'll make a new character.

A couple reasons for this "alt" are as follows, and I post this looking for thoughts and opinions on this topic.
    • I want to replay the story - Think about re-watching a tv show while waiting for a new season*.
    • Money - I hear its easy to make money if you play the MSQ - millions are made that way - alas I must have just decided to blow all my money on .... I'm not sure what

    * We still have episodes to go, but I wanted to see what it was like to "binge it all" from the beginning. All the raids, all the MSQ, all the dungeons.

These are the two reasons. I want to see exactly how much gil I could make if I did all the MSQ content from the very start to the very end. ARR all the way to the latest patch of what ever, when ever I get there.

There are some things I want to do:
    • No spending money on any thing other then repairs and teleport and materia melding.
    • No Market board - nadda. No! Find the gear or be given the gear. No merchants either.
    • One class level 1-80 - no other jobs till 80.

I am sure this challenge has been done on twitch and youtube and so on, I just want to see with those constraints if I can play through all the MSQ stuff and see how much GIl I can make.

I wish they had a way to track how much gil you have spent and on what - over time.

It's also important to know that: No side quests will be done unless directed to for the story to progress - Which never happens This is strictly MSQ only.

    thoughts?

I know there's a text command that shows you your total playtime hours. I don't see why the same couldn't be applied to how much gil we've earned/had in our possession and how much we've spent.

I won't be coming back to FFXIV's forums. The forum vibe is way too venomous and brings out the worst in me. I don't like who I am on the forums, so it's best to distance myself.

I think you will have to buy some gear for the very early ilv check around lv8. Unless you befriend someone to make you gear to get past it. Or you could make it yourself. Also if you still have access to your old character you could do new game plus.

Kind of curious as to why you think you can't just continue on and slowly make money from selling things. Like are you so poor you can't teleport from where your old character is? Or do you think that you'd have enough for a medium house. Just curious is all why you feel that you must redo the msq just for the gil as that seems to be the driving force.

On my character right now I have 170k. So not rich, but not peasant. I always wondered if I spent little to no Gil, as little as humanly possible. And did the msq, dungeons, raids, challenge logs, fight logs, all that from the first msq in arr to the last msq including beast dailies. How much could I accumulate. So with that in mind, the new game plus would not work because it doesn’t award Gil or items or exp. I want all of that.

The other reason is I often forget, “who is character again and why do I care.....oh that’s right I forgot about you”, the story sometimes. Especially when I take breaks between expansions.

Having run many alts myself, you'll make about 2~3 million gil by Heavensward, if you buy nothing. I bought things, major glamour purchases, 300k per augmentation item for DRG armor. That was 1.5 million, prior to Heavensward. I still had close to a million walking into Ishgard.

So I'd say you'll make close to 10 maybe 11 million gil by the time you get to level 80.

Won't mean much. Gil doesn't have a lot of benefit in this game. Having a lot of it merely saves you time, lets you get cutting edge crafted gear on release without much time investment. Beyond that, saves you time gathering and crafting.

I'll lend you some more tips. Do Centurio hunts, Rank 3 page and B rank once a week. Spend the Centurio Seals on Aethereyte tickets. This means free teleportation all of the time. Level one crafter so you can do melding yourself, since melding is universal now, this can be any crafter. Level one gatherer. You can make money fairly efficiently with one hour of gathering per day, just look at Crystal, Shard, or Cluster prices and go gather those. Or any high demand ingredient.

I know those tips aren't in line with your idea, but no matter how much gil you save from doing the MSQ, you'll run dry again eventually. Might as well learn how to gradually build up gil reserves without thinking too hard about it.

I'mma tell you my "secret" to getting rich in this game that isn't crafting. Do the higher floors of Palace of the Dead (Floors 150+), and hope you get the pegasus mount or whatever. That mount usually sells for a crap ton of gil. Last time I got 20 million or so for selling it.

What/why do you care about the gil then? It's practically useless unless you know that for sure you'll be getting a house or pouring into an ARR relic weapon. I know for some people having a lot of gil gives them a sense of accomplishment amongst other things. Due to not being one I have a hard time wondering why people in this game get obsessed with it.

Again with the redoing with the story via NG+ could be done with your old character. I barely ever do any real gil maker things and I've easily have over 30mil most of that I don't touch. In hopes that one day I'll get a medium.
