Yeah that is how guild wars 2 did it, made it possible to implement many different dyes without cluttering the inventory of people. Easy and fast to use, and the glamour even had multiple dye options for the same armor piece, so you could dye individual parts of a chestpiece as example. I always hoped they copy that system as some armor items are dying exactly the part you don't want to dye.
I was thinking of the ESO system, but it sounds very similar!

I would love to have the ability to dye something like the main armor piece one color while making the attached cape another. Though I can see that being a harder system to implement with our current setup. Feel like that would require a larger overhaul of the entire system whereas just making applying dye of any color cost gil would be pretty easy (also it could provide more incentive to do certain content, like if the new bright pink was tied behind contributing enough to the Ishgard restoration, it would make more players incentivized to do crafting/gathering so they can unlock it)
