Why so many players with base classes when they could already have a job?

And they usually don't answer when I ask. Only one guy has answered before when I asked why he was a thaumaturge when he could be a blackmage, the answer was something like: "I am drunk right now. I don't want to talk about that".

Am I missing something? Are there any advantages? In the picture, 2 lancers and 1 archer, above level 30.

Some people just don't care about their quests. You'll also see people at level 80 that don't have all their quest skills unlocked - but this is far harder to notice.

I sometimes make this mistake due to the fact that I keep on forgetting that gear set loadouts are a thing and just organically swap classes by clicking my weapons instead. Which would be fine if SCH didn't make me lazy since it already has the soul stone equipped. Usually I catch it before I end up in queue but there's been a few times I've had to withdraw from said queue because it took me too long to notice. Thankfully though I haven't actually loaded into an instance without a soul stone since ARR, and probably would expire from embarrassment if I did.

That said I see this happening for a few reasons:
1. They're like me and they just plain old made a mistake.
2. If they're returners who haven't played since ARR they might be under the mistaken assumption that it's still a viable strategy, since back then the cross-class system could allow someone to be at least not a complete burden without their soul stones.
3. They genuinely don't care since most people aren't going to kick them unless they seriously hamper the run.

Definitely point 1 or 3. Had a gla that was lv58 synced down to an above Haukke Manor that when I asked why they had said they hadn't bothered to go do the quest yet. While also wanting brownie points for having full 115ilv set on. Went n looked them up to find out their only other job was sam at its unlocked level.

I'm not sure if this part has improved since I haven't started a class from 0 since the very beginning (6 years ago, wow!) but when I started, I didn't even know jobs existed. I got my gladiator stuff and went in to fight garuda having NO idea I was supposed to be a paladin. I think the game does a better job of guiding you now with that little interface that shows you the next quest, but it's possible that they think, "oh it's just another quest" and don't know any better.

It also depends if they are on a preferred server or not. they can actually level up way to fast and be above level 30 before they know it and not have completed that one slyph quest to start that part of MSQ that leads up to totok dungeon (cant remember the name of it). Without that particular MSQ completed all jobs are locked until then. THe game doesn't tell you this bit what so ever either there is no notice that it is available either. i hit level 35 and I haven't completed it yet. I had ot look it up to see what I was doing wrong. I was simply not far enough in the MSQ.

I will point this out, teh following dungeons are not dependent on the MSQ meaning you can unlock them just by being the appropriate level and talking ot the corresponding npc. Halatai, Quicksand Caves, Qarn, Darkhold, Aurum Vale.

I also wonder what instances these are in... nowadays with all the experience bonuses, you can be over level 30 and still have jobs locked because you haven't progressed the main story far enough.
