Given how ARR unlocks flying, I think it would make sense if subsequent expansions have both aether currents and ARR-style unlock as options.

ARR - complete 2.0 MSQ and unlock flying in all zones.
Subsequent expansions - do quests/aether currents to unlock flying sooner/individually per zone as you do MSQ or wait until you complete 3.0/4.0/5.0/etc MSQ to unlock flying for all associated zones.

The only reason ARR unlocked it right away, is because the ARR zones weren't designed with aether currents. It was easier to just have it unlock with the MSQ, than to add aether currents to 16 zones.

Pathfinder jokes aside (really, compared to that system, the XIV one is a godsend), is it really too much to ask to do 4 quests (clearly labeled with a blue + icon) and using the Aether Compass every now and then while going through the initial MSQ?

Oh, I don't mind the aether currents, and like I said, it unlocks flying faster in some cases. That said, it makes it more consistent if there is the same option as ARR. Also, on some characters, I don't want to do side quests, and I think it'd be nice if there is an option not to have to do them.

Avoiding all combat is a reward, not a privilege.

I'll entertain that design philosophy, although it still doesn't remedy the aether current mechanic's redundancies:

    - You can simply level high enough to avoid all combat in a zone
    - You are already rewarded with flight, to have it disabled in later content

    - You have to be at least eleven levels above the red mobs to avoid them in the first place and there's no way you're avoiding them outside of sneak and...actually avoiding them.
    - It's disabled because you are not meant to go there in the story yet. Your mount speed also drops to barely a sprint upgrade which makes flying painfully slow and you wouldn't get a speed boost until completing a certain quest on the map anyway.

    - The avoiding combat as a reward design philosophy is still contradicted even if you can only avoid most of the mobs. I don't know what you're talking about by the way, I was leveled enough to not have to fight a single zone mob in the first zone I did at least.
    - As I've stated in thread, there are many other ways to restrict area access without disabling an already unlocked feature and physically slowing the player down. This is still a redundancy.

-You’re a third of the way there then. Put in the rest of the work or have someone carry you to them. Being overleveled at the start of an expansion is not a justification for instant rewards.
-You had to unlock flying in most RPGs within probably the last third or quarter of the game. You just have to do it with maps now. It’s a slight inconvenience at worst.

No, you are rewarded with flight in ARR zones. Flight has never been universal.
