I love the aether currents, it's like a mini-puzzle, figuring out where they are with the compass while exploring the land. It feels like a proper achievement to find all of them and unlock flying in a zone.

And of course, as Iscah said above their purpose serves to lock part of each area until you've progressed the MSQ enough to reach it.
