    Whats the tradeoff?
Because I think the Aether Currents are good to keep you out of areas you shouldnt be in right away.
If you wanna be able to fly unrestricted, then the map design is gonna have to change to have invisible walls or have structures to keep you out of areas before your suppose to be able to reach them.

The only reason ARR unlocked it right away, is because the ARR zones weren't designed with aether currents. It was easier to just have it unlock with the MSQ, than to add aether currents to 16 zones.

Pathfinder jokes aside (really, compared to that system, the XIV one is a godsend), is it really too much to ask to do 4 quests (clearly labeled with a blue + icon) and using the Aether Compass every now and then while going through the initial MSQ?

Oh, I don't mind the aether currents, and like I said, it unlocks flying faster in some cases. That said, it makes it more consistent if there is the same option as ARR. Also, on some characters, I don't want to do side quests, and I think it'd be nice if there is an option not to have to do them.

You can skip unlocking them buy a skip. Goodness the things some want in this game to be sure do have nothing to do is simply amazing. They made them so easy to find now with many of them at the msq or sidequest objective locations and having to be land locked initially is a good thing. Seeing the game from the ground and the actual landscape from that perspective is a good thing.

I kinda like them as a little head-canon explanation for why my mounts that blatantly shouldn't be able to fly, can in fact fly.

Well of course my horse can fly, I've attuned to this regions wind aether. The currents carry him where he needs to go.

Like I'm not really flying, I'm just getting deliberately buffeted about by a magical mini-hurricane.

Indeed, and that's why more consistency is better. When ARR does something different with flying, it doesn't hold up as well. Instead, by adding to the aether currents, it showed at least progress that after ARR we no longer have to wait to finish the MSQ and can start unlocking flying per zone, but the old method of waiting to unlock everything at once is still there.

There is nothing more I hate than the Aether Current, but mainly because my mounts feel so slow running around to get like 15 of them only to find out there are till hidden ones from quests.

No, thanks. Aside from being tied to achievements they're fun to hunt down. Not everybody shares that enthusiasm, though you only have to do it once and then it's unlocked forever.
