Yes the franchise is touted as being inspiring to many people. Most of that is from the journey you take along with the characters in their games. Or the music and art design. Or the friendships and other relationships they've made from finding other people who've played the games.

The games themselves however have a lot of negative, horrible and depressing crap happen in them. Let's take IV where you start the game returning from stealing a town's crystal while also having killed a lot of the towns folk to the point where when you get back there one of them poisons you. Then you and your BF unknowingly kill a future party member's mom. Then have the package you were sent to deliver to said village open itself and kills the rest of the town. Skip a little ahead and you see your former employer attacking a castle where everyone except like five people are dead. One of them only surviving due to their lover shielding them from the arrows.

I could go on even with just IV or go on about the various horrible stuff that happens in VI which gave birth to one of the most famous Villains of the series. But Sazh must be wrong when he said everything thing isn't just Sunshine and Rainbows.
