Deceased Player Accounts

We've recently learned that two players that were founders/friends of our FC are dead (they lived together). Is there any way to recover their account or add it to an active service account to keep the character(s) alive. The players died the 5th of September and while we have tentative contact with the family, this is not something we want to bother them with. Please let us know if there's anything any of us can do. We'd be willing to pay separate subscriptions if its possible. Please let us know.

It's not what you're going to want to hear, but SE is not going to be able to do anything like this for you.

I previously worked for a company that had service contracts with its customers and while we would take someone at their word if they wanted to cancel the account of a recently deceased family member, that was all that could be done for them. We could not transfer ownership of the account or refund for paid services even if they provided proof of death because it has far too high a potential for being a scam. And we wouldn't do it for anyone that couldn't provide a certain amount of information about the deceased, which usually meant family or their estate lawyer. The company even used to require proof of death (e.g. faxing a death certificate) before they would allow the cancellation of the account, but changed that policy after one family won a multi-year court battle with them over an account that they didn't cancel for over a year despite multiple attempts by the family and the company botching things up a few times.

Thinking more about it, may I offer a suggestion as a possible alternative? Someone willing in your FC could create two retainers with their character names and appearances and set them up in a private room in your FC as a sort of memorial room. You could decorate it in a way that would bring to mind what they liked doing or things that remind you of them.

We did that. And I pretty much assumed the same but at this point we were just trying anything to keep whatever we can of them alive.

A death certificate is out of the question. We were lucky that one of us was tenacious enough to get confirmation on their status at all. But I totally get it. It was... Just a shot in the dark. I was hoping SE had some kind of policy but other than just cancelling service, I don't think they really do.
