I've mentioned this before, but a fourm is more than just a place to discuss things between people. It's public, and offers information to people looking for it. Message boards are not just about the conversation, they're also about providing a growing searchable database of Q&A, tips, etc. It doesn't matter if the original posters are still here to communicate further with.
Instead of creating a new topic to post in, I'd advocate to continue using an old one.

You are thinging about self bump which is generally more frowned upon in forum communities.

And as with a lot of software, a lot of those tips and hints ends up being deprecated. Most notably class/job discussion and technical issues.

Seriously, the individual you so dumbfoundly is trying to protect pushed a 3 and another 6 year old thread about latency issues to the front page. Half of his posts are literally about bumping dead and decomposed threads. I've counted!

Is it upsetting? Not really, because as i mentioned he is breaking the rules and as such should be banned. What is upsetting however are people who gives this troll a "free" feeding ground by going around and telling others that he is doing no wrong, which only servers to agitate the community.

Should bumping be ok? Yes obviously, if it actually servers to forward the discussion as indirectly mentioned in the rule.

I don't think they're arguing it the best way in relation to the troll, but the overall defence of keeping forum threads open is valid.

The solution to the current problem is not to enforce thread locking but to stop the individual who is maliciously resurrecting threads.

I don't revive old threads very often but it has occasionally been useful to do so, and I don't want that ability restricted just because one person is determined to break the rules. I don't want to be forced to create a second thread if the discussion in the old one is still relevant and valid - especially in the slower forums like the Lore forum.

If we had a discussion six months ago on [obscure thing] and I want to further discuss the thing, it's likely to be more useful to fish that thread out than to start the discussion over. 90% of the people there will be the same people that were there for the original discussion and we can pick back up where we left off. It's also easier to quote the earlier discussion if we have new insight on old statements.

The current bumping needs to be stopped, but I don't agree with the calls to resolve it by locking down the forums.
