An Unexpected error has occured. Exiting Final Fantasy

Hello! So ever since yesterday night, whenever I try to enter the game, it'll take me to the character selection screen and then, once I try to load into the world I'm met with the following error message:

An unexpected error has occured. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV.
    2020-08-27-17:01

    ffxiv_dx11.exe+1295F48
    ffxiv_dx11.exe+129853E
    ffxiv_dx11.exe+129B005
    ffxiv_dx11.exe+45CCDC
    ffxiv_dx11.exe+191762
    ffxiv_dx11.exe+1364409
    KERNEL32.DLL+17BD4
    ntdll.dll+6CE51

I should note I'm playing on an external HDD, however have been doing that with no problems for over a month by now. I have tried reinstalling the game and while that let me actually spawn in the world for a few seconds, once I tried teleporting to Gridania, I got the same error message. I've tried rolling back to a previous Windows update and that doesn't seem to have worked either. I've also tried deleting my local character data in my documents folder but again, didn't seem to make a difference. I tried logging into a different character in a different server (still same data center) and it looked like I could play with no problems, but it was a level 1 character so there wasn't much I could do in terms of testing.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Does this issue happen when Final Fantasy XIV is the only program running? Also, could you provide a system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

Thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

I have the same error, starting on 9/18/2020. I received it while trying to teleport to Sea of Clouds. Can make a new character in another world no problem as well. No other programs running in the background. I have tried multiple things like running in different modes, rolling graphics and OS systems back and forwards. I have no modifications to my computer graphics card. I have tried removing overlays, etc. Anything that was on the forums I have tried with no success.

Good morning and thank you for the reply.

If it is only happening with this one character, you may want to try deleting the locally-saved data folder (My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV). Make sure to create a backup of this so you can replace it if it doesn't solve the issue.

Just coming in to say I'm having the exact same problem, in my case the game crashed while loading into the ruby bazaar offices and any attempts to load into that character lead to the exact same crash message as the OP. Issue seems to be related to the area as any alt character aren't affected.

I've tried virtually everything from fiddling with drivers, starting in dx9 mode and deleting local data with no success.
