invisable players?

I have been seeing this a lot. Random monster in the overworld getting killed by an invisable player. Sometimes it is a group of invisable players aoeing down monsters. I will then see a trio of gibberish named players all following one guy around. The group is only visable in a town or quest hub and vanish outside town. This seems most odd to me.

Those are bots using illegal programs to hack the game - they're not invisible but actually moving around under the scenery and teleporting instantly to specific points automatically. Most if not all are run by gilsellers ('real money traders'/RMT), companies that harvest in-game resources to produce gil that they then sell to players for real money. Normally they will have nonsense names made up of random letters, and with the World Visit system it's now common to see them from other servers.

They've been a bane in the game since the beginning, and sadly most MMORPGs suffer from their ilk. All you can do is send in a report to a GM about it, but you will usually not see immediate results, as SE only mass-ban bot characters/RMT wholesale at regular periods, not ban them as they're reported.

I can't report them under rmt can I? That is the only thing you can report in game that I have seen. Don't you have to send in support tickets for other stuff?

You need to send a report through the Support Desk accessed through the menu UI bar. It's under System, next to Social. Then, click Contact Us -> Report Cheating.

2 possibilities, Bots as mentioned above, or full server with too many players close by. If your graffics card isn't set to max it will fail to render players if there are too many, and even with a max setting like my system, some people will fail to render or pop in and out of visibility in crowded areas ie Ul'dah at peek times on Balmung. or Fate trains during the Yokai event.
