Do you think the Mentor system could be fixed by lifting most restrictions to it?

A huge chunk of mentors currently are just massive memes. Making it easier to become a mentor would just make the 'burgerking crown' memes even worse.

I already have low expectations whenever I see a mentor in df, I don't need it lower.

A mentor should mentor and none of the requirements/restrictions lead to one being able to, or even compelled to do that.

There isn't really anything in the game they could leverage to quantify helping people (aside from Mentor roulette, which you don't get until you're already a mentor) so tbh I'm not sure how you'd measure that, but there needs to be something.

Leaving aside anything else—because the mentor system is arguably broken, or at least not well-balanced in some ways—I don't entirely agree with that statement; I think there are ways to do a slightly better job of measuring how you help people even outside of mentor roulette. I wrote up a hypothetical version of one possible change some months ago just as a proof-of-concept, though it requires modifications to the commendation system.
