Accessibility Issue - Target filtering is amazing, but no options for R1/L1?

Hello, I'm a relatively new player who has been thoroughly impressed by the game's vast controller options, but I'm feeling a bit confused as to why there don't appear to be any target filtering options for players using R1/L1 (or RB/LB for xbox controllers) to target enemies in combat.

Despite there being options for d-pad targeting to apply different filters based on if you weapon is sheathed or not (allowing, for example, a player to only target engaged enemies once in combat), using R1/L1 while accessing the crosshotbar is permanently set to cycle through all onscreen enemies, even ones that are not aggressive.

This is causing me a bit of an accessibility concern. I have some minor coordination issues that make targeting with the d-pad mid combat to be quite difficult, but it is also my only option if I want to make sure that I don't accidentally target a nearby, non-hostile enemy. If I want to use the inputs that are significantly easier for me, I instead need to awkwardly maneuver the camera so that no other enemies are on screen, which can also be difficult. It is very frustrating for me because I know that the code exists in the game to target exactly what I want to target, but the option to have it on my preferred input is not available, despite the otherwise very expansive UI options. If there was an option to enable target filtering for R1/L1 while your weapon is sheathed / drawn it would greatly improve my ability to play.

I'm not sure if this is the sort of place to be asking about potential accessibility features, but I just wanted to make a thread on the slight chance it might get seen by Square, or for any other players with other accessibility concerns they've never felt they had a space to voice. Are there any small settings that you would like to see that would make the game more playable for you?

Have you considered trying keyboard and mouse instead? You may find it easier to play the game with those tools instead of a joypad. Or maybe joypad is what you find easier but I don't know your situation so I decided to throw out that option in case it's something you have not thought of.

Something I have done to help myself with a targetting issue is I have a key bound to "Target Nearest Enemy". No idea if you can make a macro to do that on joypad but if you think it might help you to have this option perhaps look into it. Or maybe something like this already exists in the target settings for joypad?

It would be nice if I could have ctrl+right/left click and alt+right/left click for keybinds on hotbars. I have small hands and a disability that affects the use of my hands so the range of keys I can easily reach is quite limited. I can work fine with what I have but it does mean I need to manually click more abilities than I would like. This small change would have a very positive impact for me.

I do have a mouse with extra buttons but it has only two extra and I don't have the option of using a different mouse because I use an ergonomic one due to my physical limitations. I did try to play with joypad before but I found it very frustrating due to being unable to get the controls to work in a way that is comfortable for me.

The weird thing about this game is that it has I think 3 places to change controller options instead of a one-stop-shop. This makes it confusing and hard to recall exactly where you can go to change this. I have it where I can cycle through either party members or NPCs or enemies except I don't remember how I did this. I enjoy playing with the controller so much more than keyboard and mouse. Plus, less risk of carpel tunnel or something...

Thank you for the advice. I've tried a keyboard and mouse but sadly find it more difficult for me personally - using a controller is the only way I can play comfortably. As for macros, I have a few targeting macros set up that have helped a lot, but sadly none that can replicate the functionality I need. 'Target nearest enemy' can be helpful, but because it can't be used for cycling through multiple enemies in the same way that R1/L1 can be, it doesn't help me with this issue.

Well, both L1 and R1 are already being used in both single press and hold forms. And D-pad left and right are pretty much the best remaining options for tab-targeting

The controller has the target nearest enemy built in. Also if you’re locked on, you can use l1 or r1 to swap enemies

It's worth noting that the "manoeuvring the camera to avoid the wrong enemies" is, as far as I can remember, mostly an issue in low-level dungeons like Sastasha where you have swarms of fireflies visible in the distance. If there are only a few enemies on screen, it's less of an issue.

I use L1 to switch targets all the time and I'm used to it.
