NOOOOOOPE! lol. See I really only mention Tera because thats the mmo I played for 4 years before I came here. It was also my first mmo. I was there from the beginning and quit a few months after they put the Rocker outfit in the game. That's around the time the loot boxes started added useless things to the loot table to force you to buy more boxes because getting an item reset the chances or whatever. So I speak from experience and pain. Tho DCUO might be worst but I've never played it.. and with how you mention it...... ye---ah I'mma stick to XIV. No loot boxes or stupid loot tables to play. Just... see and buy.
The thing with outfits is that they've mastered the art of putting one or two really good utility pieces in each set. There are a number of items that are mostly appealing for the boots, hair decorations or a skirt you can't even see on the full-costume preview. Your opinion may vary on whether this is a good thing or a shameless money grab. All the outfits aren't terribly exciting either: half of em from npc's that are no longer wearing them or are no longer around to wear em, the other half being original designs but kinda bland looking.
We then have the highly disturbing lack of weapon bundles. This one really gets me down, cuz when I go into a cash shop I head over to the weapons section first to see what they've got, see how cool they look, and am somewhat pleased. Mogstation's is extremely pitiful. All you've got are: 1) Scythes 2) all of the Heavensward weapons 3) FFXIII weapons. That's it. No weapons for any other job in that shop, not even my dear Rouge Ninja. Disgraceful.
As to weapons, there is indeed a puzzling lack of them, particularly given that there are a number of unique NPC weapons that match costumes already sold in the shop.
Y'shtola's BLM staff from Shadowbringers is being sold now - separately to the outfit and equippable by both genders - and I can only hope they do the same for other weapons at some point. Particularly her WHM staff as there is a general lack of low-level glamours that don't use the tree-branch aesthetic.
(Yes, before anyone brings it up, it would be nice if they let you acquire it in-game. But that seems highly unlikely.)
I know people hate to hear it and i hate to say it but...they are optional.
Also their prices are quite fair-compared to other MMOs like ESO or BDO as a few examples.
its unfortunate that the new mount is so expensive but its what it is.
the price of outfits is okay but every outfit that costs $$$ should be dyable and account bound not character bound.
lvl boosts shouldnt go over lvl 50 imo /shrug
but generally the -optional items- on FFXIV are truly optional.
WoW's character services are over the top but cosmetics are all account bound. There are no mounts, minions/pets or transmog/glamour pieces (for that one brief time WoW tried to sell those) that go to just one character. Yes, WoW is more focused on alts. You need to reroll to play another class. But still... FFXIV clearly has the ability to make things account bound. New characters of mine still get preorder stuff in the mail the moment the I make them.May I introduce you to WoW's 25$ race changes? Or maybe the 30$ faction changes? Or a nice 60$ (last time I checked) level boost for 1 character?
I can however agree that something like mounts and maybe minions should just all be account wide, increase the prices a bit for all I care as long as I would have it on every character, if I ever decide to make an alt.
The only things that shouldn't be account bound on Mogstation are the obvious things: Dyes, Eternal Bonding, jump potions, retainer jump potions, fantasias
I don't feel there's really greed with ff14's cash shop, greed is charging too much for a mandatory service, or charging too much and putting your company out of business. The game falls in neither category. What's more "outrageous" (if you're of that opinion) is how much players are willing to spend. The fact the mogstation is thriving is enough to justify such prices. Personally it's too expensive for me, but that's my own opinion rather than solid fact.
WoW's a fairly bad example to compare to as they have a significantly smaller cash shop, no paid retainers (yet lots of bank space, unlimited glamour storage and unlimited MB sales slots) and a token system that allows you buy literally anything with ingame currency. WoW is better value, it's just a terrible game now.
For some things I think the prices are a little high, such as emotes. For mounts I'd say they are all pretty standard across most MMOs. Some charge more, some charge less. But I'll use WoW since its the closest competitor to make my point. Their mounts are $25. One mount is $30 but it includes a toy. They also have what we call minions here for $10 a pop, and a couple of toys which are also $10. They used to sell glamour headpieces for I think $15 but I'm guessing they weren't very profitable so they stopped selling those. All of that said, WoW's cash shop is pretty minimal. They tend to let their game do the talking for them, even if that talking isn't a whole lot more than a whisper lately. I think my only real bone to pick with the cash shop here is the retainer service. We should have quality storage space for free and a good glamour system for all the money that they make per month. It's pathetic that we don't. Other than that I guess I don't have many issues with it.
Interesting. Cuz DCUO was my main MMO for a long time before converting to FFXIV. 4 years ago, they introduced Time Capsules, a fancy alternative for loot boxes. It was ok for a while. But then they went full retard and locked progression/skill points behind them. Years later their Time boxes are still going strong, each one dumber than the last, even more loot added to collect skill points from to the point where they have become P2W.NOOOOOOPE! lol. See I really only mention Tera because thats the mmo I played for 4 years before I came here. It was also my first mmo. Now I played Tera a little bit to and really liked it. Never would have thought Loot boxes would slither their way into Tera though.
They always slither their way into mmos that are either too grindy or launch with no endgame...or both. Those mmos tend to fail so hard that they need to introduce bullshit gambling mechanics to make any kind of profit.
