Let's talk about the Skybuilder's flavor text

Okay so the Skybuilder's Mats and crafts (among others such as Rarified crafts) have some interesting flavor text. While I don't doubt that they were an invention of the localization team or that they are likely exaggerated for comedic effect, I do think that they are canon to the game and as such would like to open a discussion on the lore tidbits on these items.

My theory since laying eyes on the "Deepvoid Deathmouse" in 2.0 has been that when the player reads something in the user interface, they're piecing together an impression based on what limited knowledge, stories, and assumptions they have access to. This is often what they "heard about it from the locals".

The giant dormouse is obviously not from or influenced by the void, but try telling the folks around Quarrymill that. The lamia is Sastasha are obviously escaped from the nearby Ragnarok, but a Lominsan sees SWORDS and SERPENTS and obviously this is a "drowned pirate wench" like the abominations Captain Madison's crew have become.

This helps hand-wave away a lot of the deliberate misinformation, doubled names, mobs that are clearly not the things they're named after (Lady Amandine, Fenrir, etc.), and even a lot of the homages to other games (Dissidia, FFXIII) that are on items despite it remaining (as of 2018, anyway) the dev team's intention that Final Fantasy XIV is isolated from all other fictional universes no matter what the pseudo-canon funtime says.

(Granted, that sword "you can think it and no one can tell you otherwise" sword cuts both ways. Banri Oda suggests that if you like Lightning Returns, Yo-Kai Watch, and/or Hildibrand and you want that to be part of your headcanon, go for it.)

That's a very long-winded way of saying that it gives me no end of joy and snickering to imagine all of the Skybuilder items are either the Warrior of Light's private thoughts or something they overheard someone else saying about it. That everyone's just up there venting and verbally sh[kupo!]tposting about the processes and materials because it's cold, hard, miserable work.

Makes sense, though given current developments (mostly in the Diadem) its more like hot, hard, miserable work :P
