It's some cryptic ratio between post count and like count, at least according to some older users.
I've seen posters with double my post count, and less gold medals
In other forums, I usually consider like buttons a nuisance, especially in the WoW forum where it's needed to unlock certain privileges.
But in this forum, with its daily post limits, it's a nice way to say you like a post without wasting one of your daily posts if you don't have anything to add to that post.
To show agreement to a post...

I disagree. I feel like a dislike button would be very well utilized here.
The one poster had it right about Likes - it's used as an indicator to report to the devs as to which posts they should look at. a post in a thread with a great number of likes will hit their radar.
I wish more people would use them.
Instead of just silently agreeing with something they agree with, they’d rather voice it in their own words which essentially doesn’t actually help the feedback.

The same exact purpose It has on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and many other places. Nothing important
When i see aLalafellcharacter wearing a cute glam
I did some research on this in 2018 (see this thread here) so I'm just going to copy a lot of that post here to save time.
Basically the medals are made up of two parts. The left hand side appears to represent your total likes (the filename is called "kin" although that just translates to money/gold) and it is display by 0 to 3 gold medals. The right hand side is actually a single image and is representative of your post count (post rank is literally in the filename for those images):
Unfortunately as far as I know there's no way for us to even see the total likes we've received, let alone see someone elses, so I've never managed to work out exactly how the likes translate into the 0 to 3 medals. I did try to setup an experiment with a random person (mentioned in the thread above), but unfortunately there was never enough data to really work anything out.
The post count however was much easier to work out:
Rank 1: 1 -> 9
Rank 2: 10 -> 19
Rank 3: 20 -> 29
Rank 4: 30 -> 49
Rank 5: 50 -> 99
Rank 6: 100 -> 249
Rank 7: 250 -> 499
Rank 8: 500 -> 999
Rank 9: 1000 -> 1999
Rank 10: 2000+
I hope this is of some help!
