I actually looked into World of Warcraft as well. When I saw that same old “you are here” every five seconds notification I turned back around.

I have no clue who is in charge of such choices, but making that completely permanent (no toggle to turn it off) and it constantly telling you all the time nonstop is very very odd indeed. It makes it feel like you’re constantly in tutorial mode.

As for the rest you said, I personally feel WoW has more in common with FFXI than it does FFXIV.

FFXIV is far too cookie cutter-safe-copy pasted content to be compared to either game.

I love how each of your comparison examples contain one thing I never heard of. I know what a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup is and I know what an Aston Martin is.

Unless the devs change their way of thinking drastically about how they want XIV to be - the game will never become or move towards what the OP wants. NEVER. (he's been railing on this topic for more than a couple of years now, you'd think he'd get the hint but no.)

when the story ends though, the game in some way will end. however long it lasts will be due to social contacts and finishing of personal goals within the system. unlike XI I can see them "turning off" the game permanently but that's just my pessimistic opinion. by then the next MMO will be in place and i'm sure the OP will again be complaining about it.
