Not to be blunt but GOOD! FFXI had smaller player base them most but each and every person in that game proved themselves by virtue of even having a single 75. It represented commitment. The willingness to tough it out. Be able to scrap and scrounge gil together and play through the game despite the roadblocks in their way. Roadblocks that which look upon post-cap were actually mile stones.

If a number of subscribers will quit the game because everything isn't handed to them on a silver platter then so be it. The game, community, and SE are better off for it. Those who cannot be arsed to put up the effort to attain that which they want are fickle to begin with and will leave the game with the change of the wind. FFXI's limited the amount of people who would play beyond a few days with every day challenges. Those that stay stayed for YEARS and paid for years. Going for the quick buck easy mode is going to clip their tail profits in the end. While screwing the existing players by making what should be accomplishments into no-effort rewards for anyone who can sit around while someone else exploits the game.

Not going to happen. SE is a business. They'll do what makes them the most money and the money right now are the casuals. Guess why they completely mutilated FFXI with Abyssea? Same reason.

Masochistic game design is dead. The MMO genre nowadays is top heavy, achievement system based junk that can't create content faster than the player can consume.

Just take linear single player games for example. They are usually 20-40 hours ball park. If someone plays 8 hours a day, they'll be done in less than a week. Same problem in MMOs. How long does it take people in cliques to clear new content in current FFXIV? Couple days?

The only way to stop mass exodus of quitting is to roadblock players by adding silly token/point systems that are capped per week, have terribad drop rates or have some sort of real life time-based lockout.

The argument nowadays is "This is a game not a job."

Sorry, while I agree PLing is silly, this is 2012 and the EverQuest-era is over. Time to let go. Only a small niche of players enjoy the journey anymore evidenced by the countless number of "new" games that are released which are the exact same gameplay model and become rather successful.

Almost none of the current games have the "takes forever to level" system. Even the "beloved" FFXI doesn't have it anymore and the PLing in current FFXI is even more ridiculous than this game.

Sorry, this common misconception and MMO rumor is starting to bother the f**k out of me. Players will always love the leveling journey if it is presented in an accessible and fun manner. People like it when they are able to log in and get at least something accomplished without having the same monotonous leveling style from level 1 all the way to the cap.

FFXI and FFXIV's models of straight up grinding mobs makes their journeys one of the least desirable ones in MMO gaming, and it's the number one reason why PLing is so pervasive now. PLing existed in WOW for a very long time, but it's not a problem because Blizzard invested so many resources into making leveling fun, that people who get PLed actually miss out on fun content, lore, and the game's experience.

^^^ Very much this, anyone that finds leveling in FFXIV fun must hate themselves.

yeah, compared to sitting on a chocobo for days on end doing absolutely nothing is so much fun in itself. i will say i have more fun killing mobs than i do sitting on a chocobo watching someone else kill the mob for me.

The difference is that sitting on a chocobo and watching someone kill things for me takes a few days as opposed to a few weeks, and I can do other things that are not FFXIV in the mean time. You really are out to fulfill that lowest IQ thing, aren't you?

weeks? when was the last time you leveled a class?

it takes a few hours to go from 40-50 and that is over 50% of your sp needed to cap a class from scratch.

at least i do know one thing. as long as you are on the forums i will never have the title of the lowest here.

First off myself and 2 new IRL players all started our level 1's 2 weeks ago. We're all level 36 without a SINGLE PL session. To note they also have their Chocobo's and first two job quests done. Leveling from 1-50 shouldn't take more then 3-4 weeks if that. Compared to FFXI this is falling down a 5' decline frictionless slide on a snowbard lathed in butter EXP rate gain. Having to "struggle" through "boring tedious leveling" when it can be finished inside of 4 weeks is just plain lazy.

Also why don't you stop being a hypocrite while you're at it. You call me "what is wrong with the game" yet here you are openingly insulting another player TWICE in the past 20 minutes while making fun at his I.Q.
