We could really use another hair design contest. I've already got one ready to go if they did another one.I know it's a joke (I assume) but ignoring that those dreads look like trash, the OP is a male and that's a female only hair style.
Also it has nothing to do with engine limitations. Sure, certain hairstyles could be hard to pull off with the way things are, but not all hair styles are the same.
Not one of these hair styles would require anything the game doesn't already have.
And of these the only one that might be a problem is the last.
Not trying to debate or anything, just pointing out that we don't need to make excuses for them.
Fact of that matter is that for the past 5 or w/e years most of the new hair styles we've gotten were from the Player voted winners from the hair design contest.
And as a reminder ...
"Aspiring aestheticians from across the realm have been submitting their unique and fancy dos, and the development and operation teams have shaved downed the entries to 25 of their favorite hairstyles for both male and female. Now the time has come to see who will make the final cut! Submit you votes for your favorite entries and decide the winning male and female hairstyle!"
They narrowed down the selection themselves to what they thought was most interesting which means that all the long hairs in this thread and these 2 were things they felt they could do 5 years ago. Only about 2 years now have they been making legit HQ hair and with Viera they have shown how much they have improved with hair and face modeling.
Player base screwed us and 5 years later people are wondering why we get so many short hair styles after the player base voted for them. So yeah, we don't lack options cause of engine limits.
I think an interesting idea would be to give out 'bald' character reference images for contestants to draw on top of, that way one could take a better judgment over the actual hair without artstyle bias involved /shrug
I assume that's what they did, seeing how many entries are based on the same character model template.
They were very liberal with the rules though, so people could take pictures of themselves or draw fully original pictures or alter a screen shot of their character or w/e.
IMO I think that if they do another contest they should simply decide the winners ... just like they do with the other recent contest.
These entries show a lot of variety and their taste as designers has been proven time and time again. I'd have no problem with them looking at 100s of entries and picking 15-20 to do themselves and posting the winners so we can see what to expect.
Not gonna pretend that SE is uber progressive by any means, but if these 3 hairstyles that they saw as interesting and worthy of putting in the game had actually gotten in as unisex options that would have gone a long way towards making some of us feel more included over 10 flavors of sleepy-anime-protag-bed-head.

Wait curly hair is a mutation..... I'ma mutant.....omfg I'ma XMAN!!!!! SHHHHHHINK!!!! I kid. But I'm for more different styles of hair. Not to derail or anything but that's technically not true and there's more evidence against it than for it, to use an example all our ape relatives and most mammals have straight hair, curly hair is a mutation and likely one that occurred somewhat early on in our evolution.
Crazy how that 3rd one you linked, the braided one, didn't make it, but the other 3 braided hairstyles did.I assume that's what they did, seeing how many entries are based on the same character model template.

I have no issue with more hairstyles, but if they are going to add more hairstyles ALL races should be allowed to wear them.
If they're creating new hairstyles now, I refuse to believe they cannot make 2 extra models for viera/hroth. I understand the contest ones were probably made before SHB and they're just adding them gradually hence why they're not compatible but there's no excuse to exclude races from haircuts going forward. I'd also like to see backward compatibility added but who knows. At least the ones that are earned/purchased, the default ones can be left out as far as I'm concerned.
Also, personally, I won't wear these but it would be nice to see more diverse characters running around. I love seeing people use styling options creatively.
And finally as much as I appreciate the range of short haircuts they've been adding, they all look way too similar. Having a short curl version would definitely break the monotone but can we have different lengths first? Pretty sure the last 3 added styles were all short spikes.
Not crazy at all, this fanbase has wimpy weeby taste.
Shockingly most of the winners were from the MALE entries ... because the grand prize 1st place female entry and next in line just seemingly ate up so many of the female votes. The gap in female winner votes is strikingly high, seems like people just voted for the prettiest drawings with the cutest hair styles and left it like that ... leading to a situation where male hair styles have a more even gap and they get 7 winners compared to the female 5. Guess people just really love that side ponytail.
It's really no shock that the pretties drawings with the cute waifu/ anime boi styles or FF ref materiel (Legend) got the most votes.
This is why I say the devs should just pick like they do with the gear design contest. If they don't the players are bound to do the same thing again and wonder why in 3 years we still get nothing but girlish short styles and anime protag hair. Gear is as diverse as you can ask, hair is a much more precious thing with far fewer options ... the thought of community vote is pretty and all but there's no guarantee that those who decide to vote will vote for what's in the best interest of those with next to no options.

We definitely could use more variety in hairstyles. Like SE, we get it. You're a Japanese company; but this is an international game and it gets really old to see a new hairstyle come out and it's Eastern influenced. PLEASE take note that not everyone wants to rock some waifu/punk/anime-ish hairstyle.
Most likely that's how it well be next time, if there were ever to be one. I personally have no hope.
Btw, did you notice that two of the runner-ups were from the same guy? And both made it into the game? Kinda bullshit don't you think?
Oh, I didn’t even notice that since I don’t read Japanese, but are all the winners Japanese since all their nicknames were written that way? Was it Japan only? I don’t remember.
