    alt question

    Alt question

I'm not really a new player, but I think the question fits here. If not please move it.

In MMO's, I RP my alts to a certain extent. Here in this game I have my Melee dps/tank toon. I have wanted to make a healer/caster toon for awhile since my melee person just doesn't fit that in my mind, but I haven't obviously because of how long the MSQ is.

With the recent updates, other than the ARR story being shortened a bit and flying allowed in the lower areas, have there been any other QoL stuff for alts? Like are aether current discoveries only for the single toon or account wide?

Like I said, been wanting a caster toon, but always been discouraged from making one due to how long it would take to catch an alt up to my main.

You can lvl all jobs on one character but if u just like making alts for each job then it's pretty much the same as it's been.

No the aether currents are not unlocked account wide, u gotta do them on each alt u have.

When I bought a jump option for my alt, story jump option that is, back in stormblood then it unlocked all the aether currents accept the ones in the stormblood areas, bit were jump potions go to 70 and u can jump to shadowbringers I'd say a story jump option to SHB would unlock all aether currents except the shadow bringers zones.

Ahh okay cool. Good info there. Thanks for the reply. I have almost 400 hours in on my one and only melee/tank toon and still haven't finished the MSQ. Only in 3.x something so far. I keep getting sidetracked which is a good thing imo. I'm just not in a hurry. But itching to role a caster also. Maybe I'll knuckle down and finish the MSQ and roll a caster after that.

Definitely best to keep everything on the one character - not only will you have the unlocked content, access to your own little stock of Gil but also the armoury bonus from your higher level classes/jobs.

Whilst the game does indeed allow alts (depending upon your subscription as some are limited to 1 per world) it is not at all alt friendly as there is no way for you to pass Gil or items to your alts without involving someone in the middle as you can only mail to people on your friend list. This is one limitation I really wish they would remove and allow accounts to mail their own alts but for some reason the devs are against it.

As someone who manages literally a dozen characters, this game doesn't go out of it's way to accommodate alts by any means.
The best you can do is start a solo Free Company and use the company chest to transfer items and gil between characters.

I just wish you could mail items to your alts as you could in the past.

The game is pretty alt-unfriendly. Basically the only thing that is account wide are certain mogstation mounts, otherwise every character is 100% separate in terms of items and progression.

On the bright side this means you can (and are encouraged to) do everything on a single character. I've got hundreds of hours in and I'm still not done with everything.

If you enjoy the story then it's well worth a second play to pick up on hints and details.

Don't rush through to endgame just so you can get on with your second character though - the game is best played when taking in all the side stories along the way. Some of them feed back into MSQ later so it's valuable to be familiar with them.

(You can always start your second character before finishing your first, though!)

Also, if-and-when you do start a second character, pick a class that starts in a different city because the Lv1-15 story is unique for each. Ul'dah is the most MSQ-relevant one with early introductions to some characters and themes.

Yeah I got into leveling an alt on my server so I would have character that could level with my potential friend freely without resorting to big schlong energy destroying dungeons and not actually playing with him for most of his MSQ.

This game makes life hell for alts. It is understandable from XI design perspective: You are supposed to be one character. You should have the virtual you and that is all, and alts in XI were actually more of an family feature, you would have multiple character slots for your account and could share the account locally with your family, each family member having a local login if setup etc. That is of course gone at least from launcher setup but I feel like it is still mostly meant for other things than in, other MMO game where alts is the way of life and made easy to manage with unrestricted postal service and so on.

for me, it is veteran rewards, even some I earned before they changed the veteran system I guess in same spirit as honoring 1.0 players, my pre order bonuses etc.
It is bit more than "just some store stuff" but usually not far off from that; such as paying 360 days of sub or collector's edition bonuses etc.
