Sage has existed in Final Fantasy before in the form of Sage starting in FF3 as a true BLM/WHM/SMN combo that could cast every spell of all three trees of magic. Then Sage came back again on the character of Tellah in FF4, where he could cast nearly every White and Black Magic spell, but his MP was severely limited. The character of FuSoYa later mimicked this, despite his class being Lunarian.

As far as I am aware, the class has never cropped up again in the series history, though plenty of methods for giving characters the ability to, "Do Everything" has existed. In general, you still have to split your party up into specializations in order to actually be effective.

I don't think they could render us an honest version of the actual Sage job class from the series' history. If they did, it would have to be a multi-role class, able to swap its role component from healer to DPS before duty queuing, thus acting as two separate jobs with the same name. We pretty much already have this effectively with SCH/SMN.

Basically, it's one of those things that sounds cool in your head, but there's already a history for it, and the implementation that you desire is too labyrinthine without a clear path to the center that would ever be able to make it satisfying to play within the game we currently have, without basically making every other magical job obsolete.
I was wrong! /o/
