Considering that being lgbt+ at the time was way more taboo than it is nowadays, one could argue it lowkey was a targeted genocide (through negligence) - "all the nasty gays are infecting each other and dying, good riddance"AIDS hit the community pretty hard because it wasn't taken seriously or reported on in any meaningful manner for years. The stigma was so immense that nobody wanted anything to do with it or even treat it as a serious issue. There was no public health campaign or any other attempt at meaningful government action from the Reagan administration until 1987.
It was, quite literally, one of the most horrendously evil cases of negligence in American history and, frankly, the only actions that compare or surpass the damage it did and continues to do were acts of targeted genocide or war.
I can say with full confidence that anyone who actually blames the LGBT community for what happened are either ignorant or awful pieces of human garbage.
