Very true, although sometimes I do not think its wrong to use such a aspect as a starting block. For example, if you are writing a story and feel it needs more female characters, or male characters, or big muscular barbarian red-haired women, its not wrong to start with the basis of "Right this character is going to be male/female/gay/Jewish ect". This is especially true if said story is set in a world where these apparent minor aspects will heavily impact how they are treated/the story. The important thing is that by the end they are a mixture of flaws, feelings, contradictions and charms that make well-rounded characters enjoyable.

I really do not see where people get the idea that we want their LGBTQ+ness to be the only trait. That boring. Its like having a character who just has a hat and does nothing else by say ‘Hi. I have a hat.’ At least make them a serial killer or something…
