This whole thread is dumb.
This whole thread is dumb.
This. Sexuality is possibly the most boring topic at this point. Nobody cares who you sleep with or who your character sleeps with.
This might seem like a new's flash to you, but people read into ( headcanon ) most things that they like. Graha stans will be convinced that of course he's flirting with the WoL and wants to marry him/her. Emet stans will headcanon that they dated way back then. LGBT people will make headcanons that they can relate to like Ryne/Gaia, and certain people will headcanon that hydaelyn is their mommy.
Personally I feel like there is however an unexplorer ship and that is Lahabrea and Gaius' romance that was merely swept under the rug. Gaius' character development is astonishing after he got dumped.
On a serious note, you can interpret anything however you want, disagreements will happen, I mean just look at the Hydaelyn situation. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. Personally the whole Gaia thing kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth with the revelation of her identity and what we learn in EW. I'm sure you can do better representation than that.

Just how many times is this thread going to get the Altered Beast treatment? This is like the fourth time it's risen from the grave. Rofl. Guys, c'mon. There isn't even a dead horse to beat anymore. It's already been reduced to paste.
It was nearly on the 2nd page until you commented
I think we should leave this thread - all it does is cause arguments and to be honest, it's boring.
Square Enix have extorted money from Viera and Hrothgar's limitations, but from the outside looking in it seems barely any of that money is invested back into the limited races. How much money have they made from players
fantasia'ing to and from the limited races? We want more race-exclusive hair.
We want them improved, and we want it done within a reasonable time.
Nah, this thread should go on solely for my amusement.
Letting this thread stay dead would deprive me of a source of entertainment while I'm at work.
No please god no.FF14 is a wonderful game. It's beautiful, the gameplay is fluid, the lore rich, and the graphics stunning, especially in the Azim Steppe.
Part of the reason why it's so wonderful is because it is possible to fully immerse yourself in this game. Characters all have a backstory, many NPCs are fleshed out, have their own personality, and you really feel like Eorzea is a place you can live in.
However, the lack of representation of LGBT characters in this game is frustrating for a billion-dollar video gaming company. While I applaud SE for allowing the Eternal Bonding to take place between two people of the same gender, there is not much else in this game that represents LGBT characters, other than a token gay couple in Upper La Noscea.
Some people will also bring up characters like Alphinaud (weird) or Haurchefant, and say they're "WOL-sexual". But you know that they're not actually designed as gay characters. They just happened to be perceived as LGBT because of the fandom.
Many other RPGs are already fully embracing the need to represent minorities in their game, because minority representation is an important issue that affects the psychological development of minority youth.
I hope to see Square Enix do more to represent LGBT characters in their game, because by doing so they'll let LGBT youth feel like they have a place in Eorzea and feel welcomed.
I know some people will think I'm joking, but I'm not. As a LGBT PoC myself, I am deeply invested in this issue.
It really has surprised me in this thread how the ideas of respect and how others are treated are defined. Personally speaking, I think all people should be treated with a level of respect and that should be judged on by their individual behaviour… we are all human after all, flaws and all. I just really do not see how wanting slightly more diversity in Eorza is a valid reason to so quickly throw any civil regard away as some have, or is a validation in saying that we are just doing so because we are not confident in our own sexualities(?)/just being white Paladins.
I feel like people misunderstand this thread a lot...
Making characters whose only singular purpose is to say "I love X person of my gender" or "I don't feel comfortable with my assigned gender" isn't good representation. And people not wanting LGBT characters in this game simply because they think that will be how they're written should understand that it's honestly just as bad. No one wants that.
But there's nothing wrong with having a well-written character who just so happens to also have those traits. If there's nothing wrong with male NPCs saying "my wife this and that" and then move onto the actual topic at hand, then there shouldn't be any problem with them saying "my husband this and that". Especially when we know Eorzea doesn't care about which gender you marry, so long as it's not another race. So if it's so normal and not taboo, why not show that it's normal without a cop-out like the gender-variable Warrior of Light?
As well as having a character who was a man at birth and no longer is, or someone who expresses gender dysphoria (even giving the devs a reason to remove genderlocked items). Or just simply have someone use gender-neutral pronouns. Fantasia exist, after all. "Oh but it won't fit a medieval style game". Yeah because radio and super futuristic Allagan technology is totally 1500's. Even in history we had people with gender dysphoria, androgyny or hermaphroditism. Google Chevalier d'Eon.
Because that's what representation is. It's not suddenly having a whole scene about how the person is LGBT. It's about simply having characters showing comfort in expressing that as much as cis and straight people would be. It's just having a character just expressing as much love toward a male character as Runar does toward Y'shtola, for example. If we think that's natural, then we should accept that having a guy with a crush on, say, Urianger, while being an important character for worldbuilding or helping the Scions is also natural. Or hell, Asexuality\Aromantic. It's an option. Doesn't always need to be a romantic relationship.
We shouldn't force it down's people's throats, but representation isn't forcing it. Mistaking forced representation and monotone characters with only "SEX" as their character trait is what's really bad, but it goes for straights too. Because their relationships is what's normalized. No one wants to only see the same thing over and over, and no straight person wants to see a character whose only impact is "loves X person" either... do you? So stop thinking that that's what Representation means. It's NOT forcing stuff down your throat, it's just making it a bit more normal.
However, I will say I understand if they don't do it. Not because of X-phobia or anything, but because in some East Asian cultures in general, LGBT topics are way more taboo and misconstrued than in western cultures. Japan included, where older generations compound homosexuality with being transgender.
